FA cup winner or 4th place?

Coming 4th gives you the chance to win more cups theoretically. If you could guarantee the group stages I would take 4th just for the great nights and the money alone would be enough to significantly improve the team giving us a better shot at more trophies in the future. Knowing Premier League/FA/UEFA/Fifa and their general desire to keep all clubs in their natural place and allow the rich ones to make them richer still, I would not be too confident in getting through any qualifying round (that's if the domestic refs hadn't already fatally hindered our push for fourth as they have attempted to do on numerous occassions already). So after all that I guess no one can take the FA Cup away from you, right?

Football is about winning cups.

In 20 / 30 years time, on the inside of the programme, it wont say....'Finished 4th and beat Napoli Away'.....!

you have a point right there...but

4th place could bring longer lasting goods and push us forward and after that progress we could be regularly succesful and win cups too...but thats all quessing

Lets try to do both ffs

4th.. CL would get us the money to be competetive for multiple FA cups and get us a run in the Champions League bringing with it new signings and a better team etc
FA cup is a 1 off and doesn't get us any CL runs or further FA cups or improve us in anyway.
I'd prefer many cups than just a 1 off and the 4th spot is a better way forwards to doing that than winning a cup.

You mean like it did last time we got 4th!!!

Or like Spurs have done!!

Winning a cup is NAILED ON SUCCESS......4th is if /but's/ maybe's...!

You can settle for a cup if you want, I would be happy to risk one success for the chance of many, a better club and team, and a chance at attaining something vaguely resembling NSNO despite our current board.

Winning the FA Cup, has helped shape who we are.

I dont see why you have to pick, I want BOTH.

Because it would be an even more stupid thread if you didn't...

Would you like to win an FA cup and get into the Champions League?
Err yes

Also whilst winning the FA cup has helped shape our history, our current situation is very different to those days, we actually need financial progress but would like Silverware, that's how I see it.
I want to move on as a club and a combination of Moyes and CL finances looks like the only possible way for that happening.

I'd prefer us to finish 9th and get knocked out in the 4th round by Bolton.

Seriously though, I'm swinging towards 4th place. I like reading about us in the Spanish media coz it means our profile is growing and that would happen more if we get in the CL.

We see it deferently.

I look at my team, and wonder what it was like to lift trophies. I would like them momories of my own, and winning cups does that. Finishing 4th guarentees NOTHING.

You are right in that 4th place guarantees nothing. However, it does give you a crack at getting into the group stages and if we get there and still then get demolished, the revenue would exceed the £3million or so that FA Cup success is thought to bring.
Personally, I would love to see a Cup success as EFC needs some silverware. However, the game has changed since the days when a good cup run was all we needed and the money of Sir John Moores would allow players to be brought in whether or not we were winning leagues and cups. We desperately need to increase revenue streams now if we are going to remain competing at this level let alone higher ones. CL football would allow that but, sadly, a run or even victory in the FA Cup won't provide sufficient revenue. If you look at Portsmouth and Birmingham you can see that donestic cup success doesn't guarantee much of a future.
And, as you said mentioned that 20 or 30 years from now people won't read about finishing 4th but will read about a cup win.....look at Coventry. Won the cup 25 years ago and are barely existing now. I'm not sure I would want to get old with just memories of a cup win three decades before to keep me going.
