Surely that should count as a pole position? As it's the fastest time around the track as opposed to the sprint race which is totally unlike qualifying.

Well unlike qualifying you get points at the end. In my book that should be pole for Hamilton. Sprint race gives you points+grid position.

This is one of the things that I hate about this SQ thing. I don't mind the idea of a separate Sprint race, but in F1, number of wins and number of poles are two of the most important driver stats that fans who appreciate history lean on, and not awarding an official pole for the winner of the qualifying is just wrong.

Hamilton would surely have managed to dip into the 1:25s if he didn't slide out of that corner on his last run.

Practice 2 session is going to be a bit redundant now, isn't it? Seems odd to jam a practice between Qualifying and Sprint. Nobody at the sharp end will want to compromise their SQ position by damaging their car or adding any miles to their engine.

Why would he want to do that? He has been treated like crap by the team this season and is almost certainly not going to be in the seat next season.

For me, poles are like the goals for stat. Utterly pointless in the grand scheme of things. The only thing that matters is 'wins'

I couldn't care less how qualy ends up running, and I think it adds more uncertainty to the race with the lack of practice to trial out different configs.

Pretty sure it will be just like a normal 2nd practice, a data gathering/tyre deg procession.

The schedule is weird. The only motive is to entice more paying customers in on a practice day.
