For me, poles are like the goals for stat. Utterly pointless in the grand scheme of things. The only thing that matters is 'wins'
I couldn't care less how qualy ends up running, and I think it adds more uncertainty to the race with the lack of practice to trial out different configs.
The argument that qualifying record is significant because it's the only time we are seeing the cars and drivers pushed to their absolute limit, therefore it's a true indicator of ultimate pace. Granted, it may be more complicated than that as some cars are relatively better over a single lap than others, but it's the closest thing we have in the grand scheme of things.
There are some other stats that I do think are worthless.. fastest lap, laps led, so basically half of the 'grand chelem'
