80% Verstappen’s fault that, having watched it enough times. He’s a long way back and on the outside as they enter the braking zone. He’s only able to actually attempt going around the outside because Lewis is fair enough to leave him a car’s width (unlike he did to Bottas a couple of years ago). By the time they’ve taken the first part of the chicane he isn’t alongside and should back out and concede that he won’t be pulling it off.

Thing is, Verstappen wouldn’t have tried that on anyone else. His singular focus on his position relative to Hamilton is intense to a fault. It was the same with Senna, how he used to view everything through the lens of overthrowing Prost and how he used that framework of viewing the world to go about his racing.

What I would say is after the 1st lap incident I thought to myself if Hamilton was going to go for it he had to commit 100% and if there was a crash so be it just make sure you take him out of the GP too. Max took my subliminal advice.

But it robbed us all of a great fight as that wasn't going to be the last part they both still had to overtake cars in front and there would be a chance for whoever was behind to leapfrog the other.

3 place penalty is a bit light imo and should be the sort of thing handed out for missing a yellow flag, not being predominantly to blame for a race ending incident.

Will take it though, and at least it gives the message that the stewards view the incident primarily as Max’s fault which will make him think twice about it in the future. He’s got off with a lot of dodgy stuff ever since he entered F1 and although he did seem to improve you have to wonder how much of that was down simply to the Red Bull being the clear 2nd best car during that time, not able to challenge the Mercs but clear of the rest of the field.

A three place grid drop is about on par with a 10 second penalty in a race so I don’t think it’s that lenient tbh, seems about right if you’re going to give a penalty for it.

It’s not unreasonable to think there may have been some contact or at least the force of the impact has forced his head forward.

Hamilton said he has a sore neck from the wheel being on his head, obviously it was more of a brush/push than the massive whack that would have been without the halo, but if he says he felt it then it made contact.

What I hope is that if Max does change his engine out and goes to the back of the grid for the next race, then the 3 place penalty goes to the following race. Otherwise it is just pointless.
Although maybe just maybe he gets the message now and realises he is crossing the line with the way he goes about things.

It won’t go to the following race if they take an engine penalty
