Everton Youth Teams Thread

So Zat may have had a point when he suggested trying Lookman at LB for the U23s.?

..I think this is more about aiding a youngsters development. Zat was probably suggesting Lookman would be adequate cover in that position. Not so sure myself.

Someone started a thread saying we should play our wingers as full backs (assuming instead of baines?).

So I said we could try Lookman and Vlasic at left back in the u23s...personally I think it helps their development :o

But id rather our first team played with wingers

Fantastic to see 5 lads in the England U21's squad. Got genuine hopes that these lads will be good enough for our first team and seems they have a winning mentality at that level, hopefully it will transcend into senior football.

We've been a shining light for academy work again this week:

Gibson in the U17's
Feeney & Adeniran in U19's
Dowell, Lookman, DCL, Davies & Kenny in U21's
Pickford & Keane in the seniors

Not to mention Holgate, Barkley etc. who've been in international squads before.

Why is Holgate not in the under 21s ?

Just wasn't selected I guess; isn't injured anyway. Kenny & Alexander-Arnold are the RB's whilst they chose Fry, Gomez, Tomori and Worrall (Forest) as the CB's.

Can't really argue with that as he's not as good at RB as those two and hasn't got much experience this season at CB.

Full squad for reference - very strong:

Goalkeepers: Angus Gunn (Norwich City, on loan from Manchester City), Dean Henderson (Shrewsbury Town, on loan from Manchester United), Freddie Woodman (Newcastle United)

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City), Dael Fry (Middlesbrough), Joseph Gomez (Liverpool), Jonjoe Kenny (Everton), Fikayo Tomori (Hull City, on loan from Chelsea), Kyle Walker-Peters (Tottenham Hotspur), Joseph Worrall (Nottingham Forest)

Midfielders: Lewis Cook (AFC Bournemouth), Tom Davies (Everton), Kieran Dowell (Nottingham Forest, on loan from Everton), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Crystal Palace, on loan from Chelsea), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Arsenal), Josh Onomah (Aston Villa, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur), Harry Winks (Tottenham Hotspur)

Forwards: Tammy Abraham (Swansea City, on loan from Chelsea), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Demarai Gray (Leicester City), Ademola Lookman (Everton), Sheyi Ojo (Fulham, on loan from Liverpool), Dominic Solanke (Liverpool)

I think it's actually a very smart idea actually. Increases their football IQ from many different perspectives. For a CB to know what goes through a LBs mind and vice versa in various situations seems fairly critical to developing partnerships. Unlike FIFA, this is the kind of thing that matters at this level (i.e. Baines/Pienaar's telepathic understanding).
Defo. Think it's the total football philosophy. Cruyff played Lineker on the wing at Barça. Made him a more rounded player

..I think there's a genuine strategy to try and keep the World Cup winning group together, otherwise I doubt Kenny and Dowell in particular would make the squad. The other RB I would throw in the mix is Kyle Walker-Peters. I know he played LB in the World Cup Final but I think he made a successful debut for Spurs in his natural RB berth.

Kenny and Dowell wouldn't make the squad due to talent or lack of first team football?

If the later we'd have such a weak squad - how many of those have played much adult football? I mean Solanke wouldn't ever get a cap if that was the case.

We have excellent youth team from Martínez, we put more resources into the the youth development than the period of Moyes, I think it is our harvest time from now on and in the next a few years. I disagree to loan out too many our potential youth players this season, cos we lack of backup in some positions and limited our flexibility in the player rotation.
