Everton Youth Teams Thread

..is Gibson a definite LB, I've seen him discussed as a CB? I didn't see him as particularly tall, but as you say he looks a strong lad.
First I saw of him was as LB for England, so my comparisons with Kenny/Connolly came from that and as a LB playing against other U17s he stood out.
For us , I remember him coming on as LB against Chelsea and helping to make a goal, this was before Connolly went on loan and after that Unsy moved him to play CB alongside Feeney - one advantage of loans is that it also provides opportunities for younger players coming through. So the last three U23s games, Spurs, Derby and Arsenal he's played alongside Feeney as a CB and on the live bits streamed and highlight he's looked very comfortable , a 17 year old playing against people 4 or 5 years older. So I would say yes going down the route of being a CB but may have to take opportunities at LB for England and hopefully for us eventually , maybe that initial breakthrough will be at LB.

Though as you say he's not particularly tall I'm sure he will grow taller, that's inevitable at 17, what he has compared to say Feeney , is a broadness and compactness in his body size which suggests he'll be big and strong as opposed to wiry, but who knows .

It will be exciting this season to see the Gibson/Feeney partnership develop and in front of them I've got high hopes for the Beni Baningime/ Dennis Adeniran partnership , a combined average age of 18 for the four of them. Apologies for repitition from some earlier posts, I know people sometimes dip in here so may be new to them.

...and I don't think it's a bad thing to play youngsters in various positions to aide their development and get a feel for the responsibilities of other roles. I watched a school team coached by Neil Dewsnip and he switched CBs to wingers etc during a game. That local team went on to contain schoolboy and full international footballers, Dewsnip was picked up by Everton and is now part of the England youth set up.

I think it's actually a very smart idea actually. Increases their football IQ from many different perspectives. For a CB to know what goes through a LBs mind and vice versa in various situations seems fairly critical to developing partnerships. Unlike FIFA, this is the kind of thing that matters at this level (i.e. Baines/Pienaar's telepathic understanding).

So Zat may have had a point when he suggested trying Lookman at LB for the U23s.?
