Awful in the first half, I had hoped that all this money we had spent on the youth team would have got us more than 1 point from a possible 6.

The 6foot 5 ins GK is Joe Hilton , Nicolas Hansen is the smaller one , but looked ok in that tournament.

I guess the positive of the night is Liam Walsh back playing .

Awful in the first half, I had hoped that all this money we had spent on the youth team would have got us more than 1 point from a possible 6.

It's certainly going to be a challenging season for Unsy. In fairness, of that team it was only Gibson we spent money on he's 17 , and the others we bought are are young too. When you look at the bigger picture of what the U23s are there for, then we've got six players who played some part in last year's U23s games out on loan at Championship level, another four who played some minutes last season in the first team squad , the regular goalkeeper injured , andWalsh playing his first game for months. Then you can expect probably 3 or 4 more of the squad going out on loan in January. If he can get a top four finish this season I'll be happy. Although it's early days yet scoring goals and having a prolific goalscorer looks like being an issue again, the defence always seems the strongest component.

Some interesting comments from Unsworth:
“I have said to the players, ‘last year means nothing’.... Their attitude was fine and always has been with this group of players. One or two are not performing as well as they did last year, and they have been told in no uncertain terms that they have to get back to doing what they do best.”

As a final note, Koeman was scathing about the growing use of artificial pitches in the Netherlands, and made it clear any Dutch club wanting to loan an Everton youngster must play on real grass.

“That Everton has a good squad is also proven by the number of requests from Dutch clubs for hiring our young talents. It may be good to explain that Eredivisie clubs who play on artificial grass are out of line with such requests.

“Those clubs are no longer taken seriously in England… I like a real pitch and there are plenty of them. What I saw in the first weekend on artificial turf, it didn’t really look like the Eredivisie. I cannot take it seriously anymore.”

Sounds like we might see some of the youngsters go out on loan to Holland.
