Everton Youth Teams Thread

Browning's main strength is his physicality. I think it also shows how Martinez is trying to adapt our centre halves to be comfortable on the ball and be able to fill in at fullback if necessary.

As has been indicated in earlier posts we have a couple of young defenders who I think Martinez will really take a shine too in our under 18's. The first yesterday was Lees, who already looks around 6 ft and very muscular and strong. The other lad is Yarney who is even taller and a physical monster of a player even for an 18 year old.

They are very much in the Browning mould of defenders and much like he was fast tracked from left field I can see Martinez keeping close tabs on them. I would say both are physically even stronger than Browning was at a similar age, so well worth keeping an eye on them.

Hmm .. we may differ on what we deem to be muscular. Physically Lees reminded me of a slightly smaller version of Holgate. Jones was noticeably bigger than him, then again Jones is quite a sturdy built lad. Regardless Lees played very well.

We have an impressive bunch of 'youngsters' coming through ... imminently.

Walsh is only 16 y/o ? Wow. He's really impressed me, seems to enjoy the game too.

Yet to see Dowell .. looking forward.

Sbb, Walsh is 18 this month, Lees is 16 and I would assume still growing and filling out.

It's interesting to consider the youth development under Martinez and the"natural talent v Nurtured " discussion. The two young English signings he has made, Galloway and Holgate are both in the ball-passing , play from the back, comfortable on the ball mode. Although arguably the Youth set up under Moyes was also geared that way I.e. Play from the back defenders, FBs who get forward. Martinez let Duffy go when he looked to be a competent CH, but not a ball-playing CH. Simarly with Alcarez, I suspect in the past we may have kept both as squad players.
What we have from Browning ,oldest , down to Yates , youngest , is 9 ball playing defenders some more comfortable on the ball than others. I think it is fair to say that the 7 who have come through FF have been taught their trade well. The differentiator may well be that those who also have an abundance of natural talent, speed, strength , psychological make up, attitude etc will stand out from the rest in the way Rooney/Barkley did before them. We may well end up letting some talented defenders go in future, perhaps with buy back clauses as per Delofeu. Now that would be a huge plus for FF that we are able to deliver excellent footballers as well as PL/International players.

There's something new and cheap called the interweb......with a videocam I think they call it.

So youre suggesting someone pops along to the games with a videocam or four and sets up and streams to the Everton website, and the club charges a subsciption for this, and its that easy, and 'cheap'? Hmmmmm............

You're onto something there Steve.....and we have the perfect Chairman to stage-manage it.

Seriously, a basic amateur highlights cut would be well received - doesn't have to be Sky HD quality. I played in an amateur game last season against a Dutch side and we had it videoed by a guy who charged £120.00. He did DVDs for all the players and it was spot on....certainly good enough to get a feel for the youngsters coming through.

exactly. There's a youtube vid of Henan's highlights from last season (I think). If someone can knock that together then I see no reason why someone with better equipment wouldn't be able to do something on a regular basis

They already do highlight videos for the U18 and U21 matches that they put on the official site and sometimes the youtube channel, but they are very short, normally just the goals and not much else. I assume that they film the whole game so I'm not sure why they edit it to such short videos.

There are many other considerations when you look into this, which is basically the broadcasting of a professional football match, rights owned by either the Prem League or the FA. Its why a lot of club websites play an audio commentary only. A top professional club would never want to be associated with an 'amateur' style recorded by one videocam, and after rights were paid , cameramen and equipment paid for, and a commentator hired the cost would get into thousands. Copyright in all matches currently played under the 'Everton' name is held by the Premier League or the FA, and they would expect a payment for an under 21 game. The reason top Spanish clubs show their own games is because they own the rights to their games, the situation is not the same here. The Under 21 derby broadcast by Sky a couple of weeks ago is owned by Sky who have paid the FA for the broadcast rights, its very little to do with Everton, except that they would recive a small fee from Sky. Many years ago I licensed some football film from the FA, for release on vhs...oldies might remember the 'Soccer Classics' series which included some European Cup(as it was then) Finals, including the 7-4 game with Eintracht Frankfurt(if I remember correctly) and Real Madrid with uskas etc(think it was 1960). Even then the license cost me a lot of money, despite having a contact in the FA. The cost of clips, like goals etc...thats why you don't see more, in answer to Coffee and TV.

Or why they can't broadcast them on the YouTube channel live. No way it would cost too much

So how much did Liverpool pay for the privilege of showing the u21 game on their own channel at the same time?
And how much are they paying to show all their other youth and u21 games live?

They reckon it's because the internet is bad at Haig Avenue or something so they would need a broadcast van. Surely it wouldn't be impossible to do though. If not I'd appreciate them posting the full U18 and U21 games tbh, since I'm mostly interested in the players development rather than the result of the game.

Cheers Steve.....insightful. And us piped down too.

Just to clarify someone is going to go a long to a game and records under 18s, post it on the Internet then charge.

I know the intent in genuine, but am I the only one who sees the problem here.

Not overly familiar with the broadcasting landscape in the UK, but couldn't some smaller channel buy the rights to show U21 and U18 games? Here in the US, college sports are just as popular (MORE popular in some areas) than professional sports. Americans like watching quality games even if they aren't the "best in the world".
