Everton Youth Teams Thread

Found this article interesting although would have liked to have seen the data based on u20s as well as academy graduates as the first measures how willing you are to trust young players and the other is to a certain extent a reflection on the academy of the club you are at.

Martinez's stats seem slight outliers, appears it is quite hard as an academy graduate to get the first league appearance but once you are in then you are given time to prove yourself. On the other side of the coin, Mourinho has provided quite a few debuts....just rarely followed it up with regular football. Found Rodgers numbers interesting as well.

The data is probably badly skewed by a small data size for the younger managers tbf.

Also it should be noted what kind of academy the team is known for. Could Martinez numbers work against him because Wigan had a poor academy? Does someone like Stones/Galloway count as an academy grad? I would like to know how the numbers are compiled. is it only premier league games? Interesting though.

As I understand it the stas are based on premier league games alone and players the academy has produced.

So don't think Stones, Galloway, Cleverley, Deulofeu, McCarthy , Moses etc would count towards Martinez's stats as none are Everton/Wigan grads yet all of them were heavily influenced in their early years by Roberto. Even Barkely got his debut under Moyes so not sure if he counts at all.

One of those articles I'd love to see the base data as in a way it raises more questions than it answers.

Sickens me that Moyes gets credit for Barkley. The kid made one mistake and was never to be seen again.

Exactly - so I would guess he has only given debuts then to Browning and Garbutt. Ledson, Pennington, Long, etc...don't count due to Euro's and Cups. Also teams at the top who are running away with the league or CL spots I think are afforded more opportunities to bring someone in for a debut than someone fighting to stay in the league as he was at Wigan. It will be interesting to monitor this at Everton going forward.

Garbutt was bought from Leeds so he might not count either.

For whatever reason , Ledson appears to have been held back by us early season, e.g. few early appearances for U21, bench for derby match. This also appears to have been translated into non appearance for England 19s. It would seem a bizarre decision for England to suddenly drop the successful captain of the past 2 years without significant input from the club. It looks like he is back and firing on all cylinders again. Like everybody else I haven't got a clue if or why his appearances have been carefully managed this season, and given his age probably best kept within the club if there was any reason . I think we have all been impressed with the way Unsworth and Co look after our young players, I trust them to be doing whatever is right for Ledson.

I would guess that the coaches thought he was losing his appetite or sharpness from playing so much football at an early age. They are probably managing his schedule very carefully, he still is very young and needs to be given time.
I think that in time he could well play that no. 10 role and it may be as well that his game is being modified at Finch Farm. It would be interesting to know what position he played last night.
