Everton Youth Teams Thread

..I’m a bit old school, I prefer the lads who are better to be pitted against older players. It can all get too comfortable in their own age group.

I was fortunate to play representative schoolboy football and then youth with a professional club and from 15 I rarely played in my age group. I saw Rooney at 15 playing for Everton U18s and he was a stand out. I get your point about physicality, though. There’s no right or wrong. There was a goal in the 2nd half of that big away win where Gordon out muscled the defender. He wanted it more. I was more chuffed with that than the fancy things.

I reckon we both like him lots.

I notice he’s a February born, so he’s in the middle of his age group. It makes his progress more impressive. If (like me) you’re a September born it’s a huge advantage in schoolboy/youth football.

Do you think its benefiting our young lads to get games in the first team even though were doing badly or would you have preferred them to go on loan?

..I think if they’re ready and capable of playing top flight footy they should be thrown in. I suppose there’s only Davies of the current crop who never had loan experience but we were struggling when he came in last season and it gave everybody a lift.

I fear many loanees will be playing with a view to moving them on whilst one or two will be almost on trial. What do you think?

I'd have prioritised the kids and put them into a 1st 11 on paper before looking at what existing players can compliment them and if new signings can add some experience and quality to help the group develop.

Everything id have done in the transfer window would be geared at creating a team strategy and group culture to help the kids come through and cement positions.

Instead it seems like any and all effort is made to not play them and then drop them in the deep end.

Whilst you can possibly say throwing kids in situations like the current one could be detrimental it is also a good test of their mettle and how far along they are mentally. It's all well and good showing you have talent in the U23's but if you're going to hide in games (Dowell) what use are you outside of a team that rarely needs you to stand up and be counted?

...sounds sensible, unfortunately we don’t seem to have a strategy, everything being done on the hoof. It’s difficult with youngsters, though, because what one manager likes another might not.

Agree with both of you. I see Lookman be dropped in and then actually dropped for numerous games...cant be good for confidence. Yet someone like DCL must be thrilled with all the games hes playing.

I have a feeling that if they were rotated in/out and coached on good/bad things they were doing during games and told to enjoy the game then they would all really improve by next season.

I mean, no logic to putting in Kenny against sanchez suddenly when he could have had more minutes on the pitch to adapt.

In my eyes it doesn’t matter what age a player is; you just need continuous game time. Players can only learn so much about their teammates on the training field. We likely won’t see Kenny again for a while but it’s not like he’s playing instead of Danny Alves so why not give him 2-3 games on the trot unless he truly has a shocker?

I’ll never lambast Koeman over youth because we play youngsters a lot more than other clubs but he is very quick to chop and change but who wouldn’t when you’re on your last legs.

I think we play them more than others because they are good enough and we don't have other options.

He couldn't just sell them as Kenwright and Unsworth would go mental I'm sure...

So he puts them in the squad and plays them when he has no other option...

Just look at Davies.

I wouldn’t say that was entirely true. We have another RB but Kenny played, Davies was benched for Vlasic who could have been replaced by Klaassen. Niasse could have played for DCL. Kev instead of Lookman.

They’re good enough but his hand isn’t forced to play them.

Davies was benched for Vlasic but why weren't both playing? If they were 28 then they would both have played
Cuco has shown how bad he is every game and against Sanchez would have been madness
Playing klaassen after thurs would have been insane
Koeman hates Niasse...hes even lower down than DCL for a forward role
Mirallas has said he wants to leave the club+ perhaps he expected a cheer for playing lookman

The bloke is a mindfk

Exactly. Just saying they’re not forcing his hand.
