Everton: we look an unhappy camp

Of all the issues that could have arisen post-Moyes, I never thought that a significant decline in the technical standard of footballer would be one of them.

None of the better players of the past era have been replaced like for like. Pienaar, Arteta, Osman and Fellaini might have been chronically slow, but they killed the ball and passed it every time it came to them, which to me is the bare minimum you expect from a professional.

That's absolutely spot on, cracking observation. You could even add Lescott into that, and Yakubu at his peak had massively better first touch and core skills than Lukaku. Cahill too weirdly enough, far better footballer than he was given credit for (eclipsed by the individuals on your list [except the Skem Snitch]) .

Agree with Zat there, I am failing to see how the younger lads wouldn't be an improvement over the likes of Cleverley and the rest of Roberto's top signings just now.

They would probably bring a bit of renewed vigour to this tired looking squad. However, I guess the run of games we have coming could be like lambs to the slaughter.

Pity really we didn't have a run of games against the league's dross sides to give them some game time.

I think you will see the odd young player in the team from now on ie Davies Holgate, now Koeman knows exactly who he needs to get rid off from the experienced bunch. He's meant to be ruthless Koeman and nows the time to show it.

No matter what team plays against Southampton there has to be more movement and desire up front and get someone within 20 yards of lukaku Ffs

I disagree. Deulofeu, Barry, Besic, Cleverley, Lennon - all technically proficient players. And there was a commitment to bring up the overall level of technique for the whole squad under the last manager in order that they could play ball to feet.

Under Moyes we had the odd signing over 11 years like Arteta and Pienaar who were the exceptions to that manager's general rule to get solid players into the first team squad.

There's going to be an insurrection in the Walton Luftwaffe ranks if you carry on with this sort of thing about Snivelley

What would be your starting 11 against Southampton?

Southampton will be two days back from an away tie in eastern Europe, so I expect a result here.

Robles
Coleman Williams Mori Oviedo
Barry Gueye
Deulofeu Barkley Lennon
Lukaku

Oviedo and Lennon should not be anywhere near the team

If we're going there hoping/expecting Saints to be a bit cream-crackered from their EL trip, then we should go two up front... Mirallas to start with Lennon on the bench. Mirallas to be told to go hell for leather for 60 mins and damn well make things happen.

I think fitness is, again, an issue.

Koeman expects our players to play the high pressure game favoured by the likes of Spurs and them lot across the park - but it's evident that our players aren't capable of doing it.

But I feel that on equal measure, it's a failure of management. If it's not working, change. Koeman has yet to prove himself as a coach capable of changing his style of play. Why is there no plan B?
