We did well given that we played most of the game without a striker an the rest of the game with one that is clearly carrying an injury.

And picked up another one to boot. He's probably gonna have to sit out the Stoke game. Just hope we can get him back against West Brom.

eh?

Ross didn't 'mess around in the box' at all last night. There were two occasions where he hesitated to shoot which is a shame, but our other players were in a position to win the ball back/all Newcastle could do was hoof it clear. He played the entire game on the front foot. Kone playing himself into trouble cost us a lot more as our players were up there supporting him, and then Newcastle could counter quickly. Talking tosh there mate.

I trust Ross with the ball. I don't get worried when he's on it. He knows what he's doing and last night proved that.

We played well yesterday. That chance came from a good cross and a bad bit of defending from Mori. It's all they created though and if they'd have scored I reckon we'd have had the ability to come through it.

Stoke will be a huge test but they've hit a bit of a slump so hopefully we can take advantage.

Same team for me, bar probably Baines for Oviedo and I imagine Lukaku will be out. Can't imagine Niasse will be fit to start, so unfortunately looks like Kone will be the one.

Cleverley looks 10x the player on the left though. Allows him a free role and he switches with Barkley superbly.
See but as i mentioned before, the game at 1-1, barkley taking 10 seconds to line a shot up rather than look for a pass is a completely different thing to us 1-0 and coasting. The fact is, he didn't score at all in open play, and only once hit the target with a shot, so as much as i love seeing him line his shots and put thm in the top corner, if he is losing the ball by constantly looking for that shot then in harder games then that will be an issue. Away from the box he was excellent for me though, not taking that away from him, he looked every inch a top midfielder and the newcastle team didn't know what to do when he ran at them. More of that in a game and only good things can happen.

think the cleverley thing is a little odd tbh, i mean i like him as a player and even i admit in the middle he has been so poor there. I would assume if you open up the thread about signing him, 90% of anyone posting probably thought he was going to take that left position up in the team, sure he did in august as well? I'd keep him in there, give him a run and make it his own position.

Wasn't the best game in terms of excitement or quality - Barkley aside - but it felt rather nice to see Everton win again.

I thought McCarthy did a good job of upping the tempo and pressing in midfield, and Lennon looked decent again too.

I was expecting a bit more agency and aggression out of Newcastle in light of their recent signings, but I was pleased to see they're just as crap as ever. Poor old Dummet is one of the worst players I've seen at Goodison for a while.

I did fear the worst after their keeper tipped it onto the post/bar for the third time! Ref and linesman were utter bells too; didn't protect our players or book their snap-happy grocks nearly enough.

Big credit to Lennon for winning the pen to seal it. Think he was the last player to win a pen for us and Deulofeu etc could learn from him. He draws the foul in the same way but doesn't go down wailing like he's been shot.

But he wasn't constantly looking for a shot, that's the point.

Last night he only took a shot on when he had no other option, which is his problem sometimes. He was constantly looking for a pass if another player was up there with him, when actually the better option would have been a shot on some occasions.

And yeh on Clevs that was the thought. I wouldn't say he's been poor in the middle, but I do think he likes to get forward which negates Barkley and gives him less space. McCarthy picks his moments to attack but is very disciplined, so that in turn gives Barkley the freedom going forward.

When Cleverley is on the left he can drift all over the place and get forward and link up play, which he is extremely good at, but he also tracks back and can make a tackle. We now have him, Mirallas, Pienaar and Osman (on certain occasions) and Niasse for roles on the left. Great options.

I would disagree on barkely, he looked like he was looking for the shot, he tends to do that anyway which is fine most of the time but to me he gave the impression that he was looking for the shot constantly when he got there, which lost him the ball by the end of the game.

What i would like to see is different players for different teams as we have those options. For example, lennon was fantastic last night, but play to his strengths, del has different strengths so we play to them instead. Same as the left, clev kev and niasse all should offer something different, so use that rather than play one for the sake of it. Niasse i imagine goes for goal, kev is a wide player who cuts inside and tom is a midfielder who can hold the ball up who offers something else again.

We can be our most deadly when the other team don't know how to deal with us until they are on the pitch :)

Agree to disagree on Barks then lad.

But deffo agree with the second point.

All about rotation on a game-by-game basis.

I've said before but I think Lennon and Kev are a very good pair for the wings, and I think Cleverley can play opposite any of Lennon, Del or Kev as well.

Niasse gives us that option that Kone did in terms of another player to stop Rom getting so isolated, as well as being able to play in a central role.

For Stoke I'd have Cleverley in and Lennon in from the start, personally. They're both in good form and should play.

We then have Del and hopefully Kev on the bench to bring on, as well as Niasse for attacking options.

It seems martinez has solved his goal scoring issues now ;)

With Newcastle in the bottom 3 I was thinking that although they are possibly a side a lot would like to see go down, they have actually provided us with some of our most entertaining and memorable games over the last few years. We have had some superb results in recent years and at the same time they have often beaten that shower across the park.

Anyone know why the upper Bullens (visitors) tickets were not put on sale? Mostly obstructed views left around the ground, and Newcastle rarely take the full allocation these days.

They never sell it for home fans mate - or haven't in a long time anyway. Only opened up when away fans sell their allocation.
