I think Martinez got it wrong.

Nothing more to it than that, a frustrating game that fizzled out, because our manager went too negative.

Two holding midfielders is negative, but three is just baffling! Whilst Barkley hasn't been good at all this season, surely he'd have been more effective starting ahead of one of Besic/Barry/McCarthy, just to add some attacking dynamics?

I feel sorry for Lukaku, never gets any service.

I guess the silver lining is, another clean sheet, even if it was against a poor Liverpool.

"(It should have been) much better than that," the 34-year-old told Sky Sports 1.

"I think in the first half both sides cancelled each other out and we were just looking for that spark and that opening that we needed but it never came.

"Everton are a good team, they defended well and defences were well on top today."

Basically admitting both sides were poo

LIVERDEPOOL BATTRED US DOH

MARTNEZ OUT

I called the 433 before the match and I'm happy with how the evening went. It's a decent point, they're in fine form and frankly a better side anyway.

Thoughts on today's Derby
After thinking about today's game, I've decided that today was a point gained rather than 2 points lost.
Going into it I was nervous of course but quite confidence as I watched us give a solid performance against Man City a few weeks back and the win against Palace was encouraging.
I knew exactly how we would approach the game in a tactical sense, containing the RS and breaking (with pace). 433 was my predicted formation with us lining up like this against Arsenal.
First thoughts when the game started was that Naisy was playing centrally with Rom on the wing and that Besic was man marking slipper out the game (good tactical awareness from Roberto).
The lack of creativity was evident In an attacking sense; with less intricate passes and movement in the final third than the RS. I was pleased to go in on level terms and I thought it was a good foundation for the second half.
The sluggish start was worrying in the second half and I was surprised that it was still 0-0 on the 60 minute mark. We did, however, improve with the introduction of Lennon and later on Ross. The Coleman chance was created by Ross and he looks like he is back on form.
Before this period is somebody would've offered 4/6 points from Palace and Liverpool, I'd have took that in an instant.
Chelsea away on Wednesday, one hell of a tough game. They will be ready to expose ur weaknesses and we need to be ready, think we'll get narrowly beaten but I'd like to see us offer more as an attacking threat. Id like to think Martinez will go with Besic and McCarthy with Lennon Barkley Mirallas and Lukaku playing further forward. I'd be excited to see that line up! We should be able to play with a sense of freedom and no pressure.
Quite positive after today's match and looking forward to Wednesday. Thoughts on the approach today and Martinez' subs?

Barkley has been utter tripe, Losing the ball all over the shop and he's offered nothing going forward

Do you think we tried to go forward? Did we just sit on our own half like WBA did the other week?

Is it Martinez fault moves break down due to poor first touch or players lacking quality in the final third?
mate this forum needs a scapegoat and since osman is out its naisy, rom and martinez.

Three of those are free's and loans ffs

How many top quality players dod you think you will find for sweet fa

Thank Christ we have Lukaku who has double figures in a side that see's Naismith/Barkley/McGeady supplying him

They didn't have to be for sweet FA.....The point is, he's spent £34 Million (plus loan fees/nominal fees of whatever) on attacking options and we have NO [Poor language removed] attacking options

They are a better side, End of

They have the luxury of being able to spend 150m on new players every summer

My opinion is exactly the same as those who are responding to you.
If we opened up against them we would have been murdered on the counter and we'll be back to square one confidence wise? Why ruin that within one game. It wasn't the best performance, but it shows that we're starting to get back to our best defensively, and its something we can build on. If we were playing with confidence like we were last season id probably complain, fact is, we're not. Its a step in the right direction and you clearly aren't seeing it as one.
We should never have opened up on him but Barkley should have played for Barry and Lennon for Naismith. Rom on the wing is a gimick that has outlived its usefulness.

Basically we set up to nullify their strengths (which we did to a large extent as sterling and coutinho barely got a kick) but it was at the expense of our attacking play.
Tough call should we have been more expansive but we've seen recently how the RS can pick you apart on the break. I guess the only thing we could have done differently was bring on Lennon for miralles and Barkley for Naismith 10 mins earlier than we did.

What has pissed me off about Barkley of late is his attitude when he loses the ball, he literally just stands there, or just makes a half hearted attempt to try and win it back, he has to earn the right for everyone to do the donkey work for him, still think he'll be huge for us though.
