Everton vs. Wolves, Saturday, October 17 at 10:15pm (tape delayed) on Setanta.

(Chelsea vs. Villa is the ESPN2 match that morning...just FYI)

Tib -

Your avatar is still one of my favorite pics of all time. Closer for the Rangers this year, eh. Love that the Ryan Express is in charge - good things have to come from that.

Good things could come if the owner can sell. You may know him as Tom Hicks, ownere of the little red club at anfield.

As big as a Ryan fan as I am, I grew up an Astros fan so that's where my Ryan wheelhouse is. Those '80s Astros. I caught an espn classic recently of the 7th game of the National League Championship with the Astros and Phillies. Great stuff. I was reminded of 5 out of 7 games went extra inning... Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell announcing... those rainbow uniforms.... aaaaahhhh yes. Those were the days. And the players weren't so muscled up as they are today. I'm sure it is coincidence.

That 7th game went back in forth. I was about 16 at the time and I can remember being upset that Ryan couldn't hold the lead. It was good to see the game again. Closure... the couple of hits that drove Nolan from the game were weak. I can forgive him the small grudge that I was holding.

Nolan Ryan - what an awesome freak of nature!

I was at Game 6 of that series in the Dome.

I vividly remember some lady in front of me getting ticker tape ready to celebrate late in the game and thinking "we haven't won this yet."

Sure enough, Philles came back to win the game, the series, and ultimately, the World Series.

And to make matters worse, my dad forgot where we parked so it took us an hour to find our car in that vastness known as the Astrodome parking.

Good times.

I grew up a Rangers fan so glad I got a bit of the Express at the close of his career.

He gets stick for his near .500 record but no offense, he played on some miserable Astros and Angels teams back in the day. Think he is still the only starting pitcher to win the NL ERA title with a losing record - 1987.

8-16 with a 2.76 ERA.

Absolute freak of nature.

Woah.... was that the disputed triple play game?

We had Oilers season tickets the first couple of Campbell year. I distincly remember having to, as a group, make mental note of the parking signs and landmark. The good old days back when Houston had a football team.

No more updates on EFC on TV in the US. Unless you have Setanta you are shutout the next couple of weeks, it seems.

You boys may find these Ryan stats interesting...
Nolan Ryan Statistics and History - Baseball-Reference.com

27 years, 5,300+ innings, 5,700+ strike outs
7 no-hitters
12 1-hitters
18 2-hitters

The 12 1-hitters are amazing especially when he lost 5 no hitters in the ninth.

It's been a while but I either read/saw an interview with Jim Sundberg who claimed that during games when Nolan was feeling it, Nolan would call the pitches from the mound. Verbally.

I can easily see Nolan on the bump, peering in, saying "fastball" not too loud but with purpose, kicking and blowing smoke.

Then again, I may have just as well made this all up in my head but even so, it makes me smile.

In the immortal words of Rickey Henderson after becoming Strikeout # 5000 - "If he ain't struck you out, you ain't nobody." Classic.

Shoot, I had the Steelers game pegged as a 4 o'clock kickoff and it's at 1 instead. Guess I'll be keeping up with Everton via the Blackberry.

The Jerome Bettis Sports Bar across from Hienz Field was showing the Everton game Saturday. Walked in when it was 2-1, got to see the Fellaini goal to make it 2-2. At 11 AM, while it was still 2-2, the bar switched every single TV to ESPN for the pregame. PRE F'N GAME!!!!
