European super league and impact on Everton.

But as Leicester have recently proven it is possible to win the league. No matter how difficult it may be and how unfair the competition maybe, if you win more points than anyone else you win the league. Easier said than done sure but it is possible.

So although we may be best of the rest normally, the path isn't locked out for us completely unless we continue to let it. All it would take is champions league football to get us there. Finish 4th one year, knocked out of the group stage, win the Europa to go back in and all of a sudden the landscape changes with the right people in charge. Attract better players, improve ourselves etc

Granted we have sabotaged every single chance we had previously of achieving this but again it is possible.
And Leicester are now back along side us.

There's always the dream and we may also have one miraculous season but even if we do it wouldn't be enough.

The money made from one CL run wouldn't be enough to change the image of the club and just like last time under Moyes we couldn't start spending like a CL club after just one good season and CL qualification. To do so we would need to have a sustainable plan not one that relies on CL qualification every season against the odds because remember it's not just TV money but they also have their world wide support and could still outspend us.

Ok I'm done with this thread. Someone mentioned it in another thread and was just curious what people thought.

I think you misunderstand how it would work

The leagues would be set. There would be no promotion up to the European league a bit like minor and major leagues here in the US.

The money men don't want that kind of uncertainty.

I understand it perfectly.

And it sux.

They have been talking about a "European Super League" since I was a lad in the 1960s.

Know why they are still talking about it and it is no nearer fruition?

Because it ain't the "money men" who set the agenda in soccer.

It is the fan......and "uncertainty" is what keeps the fans interested and passionate.

I know this may sound silly but I wouldn't mind if this happens.

Its clear by now unless we hit the oil sugar daddy lottery we will never be able to compete with the top 4/6.

The CL pretty much guarantees this.

So I say let them bugger off. I would prefer to watch us compete for trophies again rather than be best of the rest.

Thoughts?
Yes in theory but only if they take all of the top 6

I don't think there will be a super league. If you have teams like Barca, Bayern, Madrid, juve , Man U , Chelsea.... what is it that all those teams have in common? They win the league ! If they are in the same league then they can't all win it can they? How long do you think any of those teams will be able to go without winning the league? Or any silverware at all?

The European Super League would kill so much of what's made football popular and I really hope that the greed that has infested the game never gets to that point. I'd rather they took up that ridiculous rule where United and Milan were going to be allowed in the Champions League despite being terrible than have a super league.

What rule you talking about?

I don’t think this will ever happen, as a few others have said, the only reason the teams are considered “top teams” is because they win things. If the abandon their domestic competition to only play in a league against Europe’s other “top teams”. Then don’t win anything, they are no longer a “top team”.

What I think will happen is the top leagues will, in the future, get more places in the champions league and the lower ranked leagues will have to go through more qualifying rounds and get less places

Personally I would like to see the whole Champions League/ Europa League restructured, but I put all that in another thread....

For me, winning a Premier League without the 6 current best teams in it would be about as prestigious in my mind as winning the Championship. Both would be 2nd rate winners medals.

It's hard to take that we can't compete with the Sky/Big 6 at the moment but a lot can change quickly in football. Who would have thought in 2014 that Leicester would win the league? Who would have thought in 2008 that 10 years later Man City would be where they are now or that in 2003 Chelsea would be the club they are today?

We have the added benefit of being from one of the 3 biggest/best footballing cities in the country and therefore, our potential to turn things around will always be there. Also aided by the fact that we are one of the top 7 clubs in the country in size anyway, and now have a potential new Stadium and Billionaire owner at the back of us.

Absolutely no way I would accept throwing in the towell and accepting that we are forever behind a club like Tottenham Hotspur who have won 7 less league titles than us and last won the league 57 years ago.

Lest anyone forgets........City were playing the the third division.....or League 1 or whatever they call it these days, art he turn of this century.

Football changes, nothing is set in stone.

True but they got the big money in at the right time, typical of us to get a billionaire owner just when they become ten a penny.

Exactly. Tottenham haven't been the country's best for almost 60 years and in 2008 came 11th, in 2009 came 8th. Since 2010 they have managed to progress so much that they are now in amongst the top 4, put in a bit of a title challenge a couple of seasons ago, have some of the best players in the country playing for them and are moving to a new 60K stadium.

Years ago they would have been laughed at for suggesting they could be where they are now and I bet Arsenal fans refused to accept that Spurs would ever be ahead of them.

Tottenham were in the 'shadow' of their neighbours and also rans 10 years ago but didn't throw in the towell. Why should we?

We came 5th a few years ago. Lets see where Spurs are after they sell Kane etc They already look to have peaked.

The difference is, this really is the only difference. They have an ambitious owner, but not only is he ambitious he's clinical, he's a businessman and he runs Spurs better than any club in the country.

City and all that have the money, but Spurs are fantastically well ran, you have to give it to him.

Christ i remember a game in November 1997, where spurs beat us at Goodison, and they overtook us in the table, and we went bottom and they went 19th.

Football is a funny old game.

True, but for all their progress they still haven't been able to convert it into Trophies. They're on a par with the Newcastle side in the late 90's/early 2000's until they win something.
