Europe Thread 25/26

I am sure someone has explained this already, but would I be right in saying...

We are likely to have 5 UCL places?

Europa league would be 6th place.

As Carabao cup final is between Arsenal and City and these will both qualify for Europe then the conference league place is 7th?

So the only change to this would be if the winners of the FA Cup qualify for Europe through the league then another Europa league place will be added so 6/7 Europa and 8 conference?

Have I got this right?

Roma are currently 4th in Italy, a champions league place, but if they fell to fifth that would be Europa, which I think would be a problem in the unlikely event that we qualify.

That’s the way I’ve read it

The owners can`t have two teams that they own in the same comp in Europe.

We won`t make the Europa Cup, so it wouldn`t be an issue anyway.

Just say we do though.

Does Friedman decide which of its teams go through or is there some kind of ranking system which means Roma have dibs?

I remember back in the 60s and 70s when 2 teams from the same city couldn’t compete in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup (these days known as Europa league)’

RS finish one place above us one year and we missed out and the 4th placed team took our place.

That rule was abolished in 1975 from memory.

But at least the criteria was clear.

I think there's a ranking system as that was the issue with Crystal Palace to my understanding. The French club with the same owners had a higher ranking than them so they took priority.

Yep, that's about it. It’s very likely that 8th will qualify for some form of European football next season (assuming England get 5 Champions League spots, and the FA and EFL cup winners also qualify for European football via the league).

But there's also a few other factors that could bring down the league's European qualifying spots even further though...

For 9th to qualify (quite possible):

- As above, but also Villa win the Europa League, finish outside the top 5, but finish in a Europa League / Conference League spot in the league. Villa would qualify for the Champs League (6th English team in the comp) as Europa League winners, and their league position qualifying spot for the Europa League/Conference League will move down a position in the league

For 10th / 11th to qualify (extremely unlikely as Newcastle and Palace are currently in the bottom half of the league, BUT...):

- As above, but also Newcastle win the Champions League, finish outside top 5, but finish in a Europa League / Conference League spot in the league. Newcastle will then qualify for Champs League (7th English team in the comp) as Champions League winners, and their league position qualifying spot for the Europa League/Conference League will move down a position in the league

- Palace win the Europa Conference League, and finish in a Europa League / Conference League spot in the league. Palace will then qualify for Europa League, and their league position qualifying spot for the Europa League/Conference League will move down a position in the league

in that scenario it is 6th an 7th is europa league, and 8th is conference

I'd think Conference League would suit where the squad is and how much we could potentially have to spend going forward. Europa might be a bit much with how little of the squad we use at the moment and how much we'd need to strengthen to both be competitive in it while not struggling in the league as we've seen more than a few teams suffer with, Newcastle in particular.

theyve already future proofed this as they are compotent business runners, different companies

palace where unfortunate, but their ownrs let them down and were not prepared

61 points was 8th last year.....

66 points was 5th

I think 8th will be a little lower point tally this year and we would have a good chance if we can get to 57/58 points.

Could do with picking points up points against Brentford.

27 points to play for and maybe 14/15 to get us into Europe.

No trophy is easy to win, but the Europa League no longer has a load of CL quality teams joining the competition half way through. So it's at least not as hard to win as it used to be, and the winners gain CL qualification.
