We haven't qualified yet

Good point, think some should still be a little cautious.

But I think just as our top 4 hopes ended with a reality check against Spurs the week before, West Brom's top 7 hopes ended on Saturday. There was a gulf between us and them. If we got 13 from 30 which would be 60 points, West Brom would have to get 21 (with our superior GD) which would mean 7 wins from 10. Not going to happen.

Sky have done a article about this:

The Foxes go into their last 16, second leg with Sevilla 2-1 down from the first game, and if Craig Shakespeare's side pull off another miracle by winning the competition, they would gain a fifth Champions League spot for the Premier League.

With five clubs then qualifying for the Champions League, and a maximum of seven allowed to qualify from Europe from England, only fifth and sixth-place teams would then qualify for the Europa League.

But what happens if the more likely event of Man U winning the Europa and don't finish top 4? That would mean 5 CL places, would it stop us getting EL?

Best ignore Sky ;)

There is not a "maximum of seven" teams allowed in Europe. If Leicester win the CL, ENG can get 5 + 3 spots.

"The only time an association can gain an additional place in the subsequent season's club competitions will be if one of their clubs wins either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League and, at the same time, does not finish in a place in their domestic league or domestic cup which automatically grants a place in a UEFA club competition."

The 5 + 2 rule only comes in if the CL/EL winning club has already qualified for the UEFA Europa League via their domestic league.

"If that club has already qualified for the UEFA Europa League via their domestic league, it results in five clubs participating in the UEFA Champions League, and two – not three – participating in the UEFA Europa League."

7th is Europe unless one of these scenarios transpires:
  • Man Utd (Lge Cup winners) OR FA Cup winners finish 8th or lower
  • Leicester win CL AND Man Utd win EL and finish 5th or 6th [5+2, 4th=EL]
If 7th qualifies for EL it would get group stage qualification if:
  • Man Utd win EL and finish 5th or 6th [5+2]

West Brom also did the same last season as this season - now that they have in essence assured themselves of staying up, they are taking their foot off the pedal. They're going to limp into the finish. I'd say the teams we'd have to worry about the most are Stoke City or West Ham, but they are too far back and have way too many flaws to seriously make a push at the end of the season. So we're pretty much locked into 7th, which is fine with me. Gets us into Europe, hopefully shows Rom we're moving in the right direction. Good times to be blue

I posted this elsewhere but Koeman is looking to ensure he qualifies for europe in his first season with every club so far. It really is a great record to have, with all my hope when he joined us based on getting to play in europe next season.

Almost certain you're wrong here. England will only be given a maximum of 7 teams from everything I have read. If the current top 7 stay the top 7...

If Leicester win the CL, and Man United don't win the EL...then the top 4 + Leicester will get CL. 5th + Man United would get EL. So 5 in the CL and 2 in the EL. 7th wouldn't get a spot in the EL.

If Man United win the EL, and Leicester don't win the CL...then the top 4 + Man United will get CL. 5th would get in the EL, and then 7th would get EL (assuming United came 6th). If United came 5th, then 6th and 7th would get EL. Again 5 in the CL and 2 in the EL.

If both Leicester and Man United won it then I guess it would still be a 5 + 2 split. I would imagine then that the top 3 would get CL, + Leicester and Man United would also get the CL. This is the bit I am unsure of. Not sure whether 4th place would drop in to the Europa League along with 5th.

My quotes are from direct from the UEFA website March 2015, specifically stating the exception when an additional place can be granted, as quoted in my earlier comment. Have you a link to a UEFA page/document which contradicts?

Clubs winning either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League," he said, "will not add an extra place to the total number of places available for that association in the subsequent club competition season – with one exception.

My head's hurting reading all these permutations. I'm just gonna go with us already being in it and crossing my fingers for a nice easy few first rounds/group. It's imperative for the club to be in Europe afaic. Helps to attract a better standard of player, and with Koeman and Walsh looking like they might know what they are doing, it could lead to a very exciting summer window for us. This transfer window is gonna be huge anyway, but would be nice to offer some top class players a chance of winning in Europe.

Sounds like you could be correct then, I apologise.

I think what's thrown me and a few others is Sevilla winning the EL last year, but they also finished 7th. Barcelona won the Cup, but also had a place in the CL, so I am guessing their place would have gone to 7th (Sevilla) but Sevilla already had a place from winning the EL.

So Spain had the top 4 + Sevilla (EL winners) in the CL this season. 5 teams.
And 5th and 6th in the EL as normal (6th get Europe as there is no League Cup in Spain from what I can see). 2 teams

Is that correct?

Sounds like it is different in England this season because Leicester are outside of the top 7, unlike Sevilla/Real Madrid last season.

Just don't worry about Leicester as it isn't happening.

United winning the Europa & finishing 5th or 6th is the best scenario for us.
