As I've said several times in this thread, it isn't the numbers coming in that are the problem, it's the difficulties local authorities have in responding to population changes, whether from internal migration or from abroad. We have a strongly centralised means of distributing money to local authorities, and planning regulations mean we haven't been building enough homes for decades.
Look at the numbers Bruce - the pressures on services etc a bit of control would not go a miss we need immigrants as we have a big skill shortage its a big problem for our country as previous governments have sold industries like the family silver - our teenagers need technical training for trades on how to build houses etc not all of them being packed of to universities on loans they will never pay back in most cases - we really are in a mess skills wise for basic jobs when I left school an apprenticeship 4 years training at work was a dream come true - yes I did the work in the fields planting for £9.35 in a nursery became a top plantsman with dedication and hard work met the late great Jeff Hamilton of Horticulture yes I gave Lectures I reached the top to be sadly knocked down with ill health - the people that trained me have gone - we need that sort of vocational training in a proper paid job - above seems to have passed by imo!
My old boss on qualifications which i have in abundance stated one day you would need one to prove you could go to the toilet - his prophecy seems to have come true too many meaningless degrees with no job to get!

Then they should protect their borders from people smugglers or they should grant the folk asylum in Eire.

The Irish government protects its borders like other countries, but that doesn't stop all migrants getting into a country. There are 20 000 migrants in Ireland and the government is in the process of granting them residency. Ironically, a lot of those migrants enter Ireland via the north on visas issued by the British government and this has caused concern in Ireland.

If the UK leaves the EU, they will have to negotiate separate trade deals with individual countries and one of the criteria will be visas. In negotiating with China over its £1 billion investment in Manchester the government lifted visa restrictions. That means there will be a lot more people entering the UK, with many choosing not to go back to their countries, as some do now. Rather than get deported many will choose to go to Ireland, as they do now.
