I am not sure Amazon has resulted in any better entertainment, nor has Amazon / Uber / Just Eat resulted in more choice for consumers (if anything the effect they have on small businesses especially is to reduce the choice available). There is arguably more convienience, though then again that might be a short term thing given the impact they have on other businesses (as in closing high street shops, putting taxi firms / black cabs out of business).

As for the rest, I think there is a fairly clear correlation between the rise of this sort of multinational disruptor company (and its associated tax-avoidance / political interference) and the increase in debt / pressure on the system that the NHS and other public services are experiencing. To have efficient public services means they've got to be properly funded; interfere with the funding (both by not paying tax and by getting contracts within the system that are honoured ahead of existing commitments) and you end up with what we are seeing now.

With regards to the bit in bold - surely if there is a brain drain of workers out of the NHS to go and work for Amazon then that is a bad thing for the country? We all might need the NHS one day.
I suggested that consumers would argue that Amazon produces value through entertainment - plenty of programming that has contributed to improved programming in recent years.

I really can't understand arguing against the variety and convenience aspect - convenience and choice is the biggest factor in Amazon's success. It's precisely the reason they can edge out localised business. You can load up an app and get anything you need delivered to your door on the same day. While you might not like that, and it definitely has a detrimental affect on other businesses, it's a positive thing for many consumers - otherwise they wouldn't use it.

We all might need Amazon one day. A necessity for someone to rely on the NHS does not inherently make it a good thing.

Not sure what this has to do with the EU like.

Firstly, its "uninformed" not "uniformed". If you are going to go on about other people being ignorant, please check what you are typing first.

Secondly, the original post was literally about how Uber, Amazon et al have created thousands of socially useless jobs whilst there is a shortage of labour - so please don't try and pretend I was trying to wriggle out by making the same point in post #82159.

Finally, can you stop trying to pretend that I said something which was never typed? You seem to think that what you think is what happened; it wasn't.

I very much apologise for a spelling mistake. It wont be be my last one.

If you choose to sneer at socially useless jobs from your morally upright employment status, well done you. You may have a dislike of the working practices of Amazon, Uber and Just Eat, but to tarnish the workers as socially useless is ignorant and insulting.

What is a socially useful job, out of curiosity?

Second engineer on a bacon slicer

Can I just say that I think forum moderator is a very worthwhile job @roydo
All worthy positions indeed.

I was curious to see if @tsubaki was using a particular definition here from a particular political or academic perspective. Quite often an awful sounding phrase refers to something quite specific. I don't get the impression they're a poster to be snobby about someone's job.

This thread is going way off topic.

For what it's worth I would also disagree the above mentioned jobs are socially uselss. I could give several examples during covid where we were able to get things delivered for my seriously ill mother etc etc. But poor working practices probably?

But is there an argument to be made about rampant capitalism? Factories in China (or wherever) making thousands of plastic items nobody really needs. Cracker toys that end up in landfill. Isn't all that stuff socially useless?

Mate, bar those meeting basic essential needs the vast majority of jobs on our economy are utterly pointless, when you stop and think about it from a utilitarian point of view. Mine included.

Which is why I drink ?

That's what I was thinking too, but then he corrected Roydo on his spelling and now I'm wondering whether Tsubaki has been killed and replaced by General Krull
@tsubaki is generally sound, but for me it really underlines why forum moderators play such a socially important role in society. Knowing when to give an arm around the shoulder, when to give a reach around, and when to bring down the ban hammer with furious anger is a tough yet vital job.
