Bloody hell Dave.

They may also be under contract to export too, and be unable to modify those contracts during their short-term backup.
I have no idea either way. I just read that something like 75% of their energy is from nuclear and about 15% from renewables, so they would seem to be less exposed to oil and gas prices than other places, but I really have no idea.

But given that France generates the bulk of its electricity domestically, why would their prices be determined internationally?
Well, It's wrong to claim it's internationally defined if their production would cover their needs the entire year.
They have to import electricity during winter because of insufficient production + they're the most important exporter of electricity, most importantly to the UK, but also Italy & Belgium & Germany.

The only reason they're so cheap right now is because they blocked the maximum price increase to 4% instead of the 44% that was coming if prices were to remain free.

No country in the EU is an independant 'energy island'. It's going to get more integrated real fast. Permits for highly efficient gas-fired powerplants are only going to be granted if there is a coal-fired plant closing in return. So in order to build a gas plant in Germany, they'll might have to close a coal-fired plant in Poland (this ofcourse with garantuees of energy-security).

So it's a case that EDF could sell the energy generated on French soil to (say) Germany for €x+5, therefore why would they sell it on the domestic market for €x+1?

Indeed, during summer.
In winter, they have to charge considerably more because they import electricity from Germany (from gas & coal plants)
You also have non-EDF competitors driving up the price because the wholesale contracts they buy on the market are very expensive expensive.
EDF was forced by the French government to sell them nuclear power well under the production cost to offset the rising prices of its competitors.

It's a strange market. This weekend, electricity was practically free for several hours for the Netherlands, Belgium & northern France because of a winterstorm.

Incidentally @peteblue, on that more global outlook...

Excellent, and I hope they enjoy leading and ‘ruling the world’. We’ve been there and done that and what good did it do to the millions in poverty in the U.K.? I’d rather we just accept who we are and trade with the world for the benefit of our people…..

Rule Britannia !

Obviously not gonna link or screengrab it, but today, 6 years after the referendum, Rees-Mogg is asking readers of The S*n to write to him with what EU laws we could look to get rid of, as part of his Brexit Opportunity ministerial role.

6 years after the referendum.

Cue 50,000 idiots are about to tell him to get rid of the pesky ‘not allowed to have bendy bananas’ law, only to realise it doesn’t exist.

So being global actually means retreating into parochialism? I'm a bit confused Pete.

Very magnanimous of the USA.
in reality the USA have been ruling the world at least since 1945.
Now they're worried about a Russia China co-operation and are looking for a little help from Europe.
looks like they don't rate UK any more.

I know you are confused. But if you read what I actually said without your remainer hat on you will understand. We don’t have to lead the world, nor be a party of a group that seeks to do so. We can just be ourselves and trade and behave fairly with other countries around the world……..

It's just you mentioned that you voted to leave to "take a more global outlook", and now it seems that because America and the EU don't really think we matter that you're rowing back on those ambitions.

Finally, someone gets it. You are spot on. With very few exceptions, Wilson, Thatcher, they are all the same. Dear god, Blair would do anything for ‘fame’ and money. And so will Boris. But he will deliver what I wanted, Brexit and a more Global outlook…….

I don't really get how us only caring for the UK is a "global outlook"?
