He’s an amusing character, Will Self.

I remember him on Newsnight talking about the News of the world hacking scandal, and they did the intro, and a bit of preamble, then came to him, and his opening gambit was to lean back, sigh and say “Well, this whole imbroglio is epiphenomenal”.
Everton that. lol

"Epiphenomenal imbroglio

The immortal words of – who else? Will Self: "This whole imbroglio is epiphenomenal." Well, we were all thinking it. For the benefit of our less sesquipedalian readers, that's "imbroglio", meaning an extremely complex, confusing or embarrassing situation, and "epiphenomenal", meaning a side show, or merely incidental effect. His argument was that phone hacking was a last-ditch attempt by print media to keep itself alive in a digital age. Like when a necromancer transmogrifies into a lich by depositing his soul in a phylactery. As Will would probably say.

Everton that: this complex, confusing and embarrassing situation is a side show... sadly

It would be nice if they actually policed their borders, like they do for everyone else who legally try to enter their countries…..
You keep banging on about the law Pete, but firstly, it is legal for people to seek asylum wherever they want, and secondly, we have signed up to international laws that both allow that and compel us to rescue people at sea who are in distress. You seem quite happy for "us" to become law breakers if anything just because it suits your arch-conservative and most definitely not anti-foreigner views.

Bruce, if you wish to go to any EU country from the U.K. you need a passport. If you wish to visit more than one Schengen country you need at least 3 months remaining. The EU are not controlling their borders when it comes to migrants, and once in they can travel freely around the schengen zone. Because of lax/no border control in the EU many end up at the English Channel without any documentation or checks being performed.

If the Eu wished, those wanting to go to the U.K. could be processed by the U.K. while they are in the EU. If they were rejected by the U.K. then they could simply apply within the EU or the EU could send them home.

When they arrive in the U.K. they immediately claim asylum and we have to deal with it, but when they arrive in the EU asylum is not claimed, and nor are any immigration formalities, they are just simply waved on for travel throughout the EU. If the EU are happy with this uncontrolled arrangement then fine, but that is an EU issue. However, allowing free access to the Chanel with the obvious intent of entering a non EU country should give the U.K. a very big say in what happens.

I believe a sensible and fair process could be arrived at, but that would require the EU addressing the issue.

But as you are for totally open borders and the right for anyone to live anywhere they want then we will never agree….

This is the government that launched a scheme to resettle Afghans after the balls up of an exit that hasn't settled a single person yet, so you'll forgive me for not placing much hope in any "official channels" to help people in need.

And a government which did not bother to negotiate a continuation of the Dublin Convention, under which aslyum seekers could be returned to the first safe EU state they came to, as part of the leave negotiations.
