Farmers aren’t greedy. They barely break even every year after 12 months of hard graft.

Stop defending lazy brits
Tbf what you say may apply to some marginal hill farmers, certainly not all, many have had a far, far better standard of living than their grandparents, and their iht free property and land have increased in value astronomically.

What we have now with farmers/hauliers/aborttoirs, is a failed system that was propped up by cheap labour/resources. Rather than pumping money and resources into maintaining the status quo, we should see it as an opportunity to localise, saving money and resources.

Seasonal work that requires to live in on site, nothing to do with being lazy... More to do with job security and not having to travel round the country away from family and friends.

5000 lorry driver's off 100,000 of shortages won't drive the wage down. Have to ask why British worker's no longer see it as career. Is it pay, work conditions etc.
Point is our economy has been established on these type of jobs being filled by European migrant workers who are willing to suffer the issues related to fruit/veg picking and also the relatively low pay rates offered by haulage contractors.

Take them out if the equation and you start to see problems.

So what’s the solution? As @Kev The Rat points out the wages should be increased to encourage brits to take on these roles. The problem here is that those additional costs will be passed on by the haulage contractors and farmers to the supermarkets, shops and businesses. These in turn pass those increases to us the consumer.

So due to the short-sighted approach of Brexit and the Tory gimps - we ultimately are the ones to suffer by having to pay higher prices for fuel, food, clothes, furniture etc…

I like many others saw this scenario playing out years ago and it was one of my many objections to Brexit.

I’d really like to see those new plans for solving this mess. Given the track record of the Tory’s I’m not holding out too much hope.

Agree with the rest, have issue with the above...
Don't believe in the most many suffered, people took advantage of a job market that suited their particular circumstances and course much larger pool of people.

Point taken.

Fact remains though - the price point we pay for goods at the tills, was and is partly based upon the relatively low rates of pay on offer for these types of jobs.

Whatever the reasons for migrant take up of these roles, it has on the whole very little impact on the overall outcome.

The fact remains, when they where here doing these jobs, trucks rolled and prices at the pumps and tills remained relatively stable. Now they’re gone we are struggling with supplies and prices are rising.

Some days I’d prefer a job fruit picking to be honest. Looks great.

There's unemployed people and jobs needing filled.

If they are capable and able to get there get them into the role or cut off their benefits.

All this talk of people being unwilling to work and it needs to be filled by migrant workers is pathetic. There's a lack of work ethic running through this country by people who have been spoilt and now have an expectation that things will be done for them and some roles are beneath them.

If you're out of work you take a job, any job to put food on the table and you should be thankful for it.

On the reverse we need to ensure that pay and working conditions are of a good standard for all, whether for migrant or domestic workers.

I wonder whether living at home and the inability for wages to cover rent, if they had to move for work, comes in to play? A few in the US are also pointing fingers at the automated selection processes.
