But what if you are not VAT registered? What if you are just @Joey66 trying to order some Dyson parts.
Chaos currently reigns in the vinyl record collecting scene. Everyone has been used to getting whacked with import duties when buying records from the US.

Now everyone is getting hit with similar taxes when buying from Europe, plus the carrier charges a significant admin fee for collecting the tax.

One buyer gave an example of having recently bought a record at a bargain £60 from Sweden only to be hit with a £20 tax charge before it could be delivered.

As someone else mentioned the charge appears to vary depending on which country in Europe it’s coming from.

Also this apparently applies buying from the UK for Europe.

Quote
"Sadly this might by my last purchase from the UK - due to brexit it has cost me another 23£ in taxes/customs to receive it."
The item cost £12.00 plus P&P & it was sent to Denmark. Gee, that is incredible.

Not surprisingly record dealers are not enthused. Prosper mightily they will.

I think the Govt are making the carriers handle the VAT. Not sure if this is a long term permanent solution.

So let’s say you order goods from an EU country and the carrier is let’s say DPD, then the carrier has to contact the purchaser and demand additional costs to pay the VAT before the goods can be released from customs.

The whole thing is bonkers
It was bonkers when we joined - butter mountains - Wine mountains- wheat mountains etc .......it settled down in time ........

Like that’s gonna happen. Another Brexit related mess.
I believe they introduced it to, supposedly, ensure cheap Chinese goods from avoiding VAT, but it appears to have gone further and effectively hamstrings small businesses and individuals and favours large business.

For me, it ought to be no worse than importing from outside the EU was, and this is far worse.

The BBC were saying a similar thing this morning, although their examples were of the recipient of the delivery being asked to pay the VAT cost plus an admin charge in some instances. One woman had bought a coat for £200 and had an extra charge of £82 to pay on delivery. She just refused the delivery and is claiming her £200 back.

It’s crazy. Many carriers will refuse to handle goods imports into the U.K.

Every day another success story. Set up a distribution hub in the EU is the government's advice. But hang on a minute what about British jobs and all that crap?

It was "supposed" to make things easier wasn't it? What a bloody mess of our own making. The wife has had to stop buying anything from Europe as the return process is often more expensive than the item itself.

Good job Joe, Pete, Fred and the rest.
