Or outside the EU we could have stopped China dumping steel on us but hey ho the tariff we had to abide too was the EUs paltry 12 % where the USA put a 50% tariff on steel to stop dumping by China -
Exactly why a good reason to leave the EU and its crap policies we will get our independence back!

The Tories refused to put tariffs on Chinese steel because they constantly go to China with their begging bowl for investment, including, the £1 billion investment in Manchester. May got a ticking off from the Chinese at the G20 about Hinkley point and on her return immediately did a u-turn on Chinese involvement. If the UK put anti WTO tariffs on Chinese steel, like the US does, then there would be repercussions from the Chinese regarding investment.

Due to tariffs on steel imports, US steel prices have gone up but with side effects.

"New tariffs on imports are boosting steel prices in the U.S., offering a lifeline to beleaguered American steelmakers but raising costs for manufacturers of goods ranging from oil pipes to factory equipment to cars". Which is why US manufacturers are lobbying against tariffs. Take from Peter to pay for Paul. The same would happen in the UK, impose tariffs or the quantity imported and the price will rise.

Will be interesting to see how Britain copes.

We should be getting a lot of demand for exports now as the pound is ridiculously low. Not good for imports though.

It will be very interesting. No one, repeat no one, knows what will really happen, we can all have a guess based on our understanding and experiences, but all the so called experts haven't got a clue really. We will work our way through it and adapt to make it work for us, just as we always have done.......

"The Government has been accused of “failing to protect” British steel by blocking EU plans to impose tougher sanctions on “aggressive” Chinese steel dumping while the industry stands on the brink of collapse.

EU Council working party papers seen show the UK is one of 14 countries that, as early as 2014, were seeking to block the EU from axing the so-called “lesser duty” rule, which could allow increased tariffs to be placed on cheap imports".

The EU wanted to put higher duties on Chinese steel - that may have helped the UK steel industry - but were blocked by the UK government. I wouldn't trust the competency of this government in any trade negotiations, if/or when the UK leaves the EU and has to sort out its own trade arrangements.

Whatever the Uk wanted in respect of these tariffs will, I am sure, have taken consideration of the wider Uk economy, in a similar way in which the fishing industry was shafted when entering the EEC....

I'm pretty sure that a country such as ours that has existed on trade for quite a long time will work out how to do so again.......

The whole subject is still giving me a headache.
It's a big step into the unknown, but I hope after a bumpy exit the UK will prosper for the younger generation if we can start making things again in new technologies free of polictical EU dogma one can only hope as the people have voted out!
TBH after 43 of membership it's going to take time years in fact IMO!

Joey, not being funny, but what does that actually mean?

Most of our current R&D budget in our Universities and funding for science and technology innovation comes from the EU.

We'll never be able to export to the EU if our products don't conform anyway
