Lettuce from New Zealand now. Christ almighty.
The short term is interesting as its a bit open ended. 100% it will be for a year minimum, prices have been kept low for a long time and most will use this to bring in long overdue price rises. So they may go down, but I highly doubt they will return to the levels we have seen currently. We will see. In the short term there will probably be price rises. But it will soon sort itself out. Just fed up with the doom and gloom on here.
Basically it’s impossible to predict because it is dependent on tonnes of external factors. I was laughing at the non-debatable thing as much as anything elseI would love to think this will happen, experience tells me it will just become the new normal.
I agree, many many factors. But simply put, supply chain costs will rise, deal or no deal. That doesn't get eaten by the the supplier, it goes on the goods. Supermarkets might try to balance these factors but they will only take the hit for so long.Basically it’s impossible to predict because it is dependent on tonnes of external factors. Just been to 2 supermarkets very small queues. Loads of food. Fruit and veg stacked high. Got my New Zealand jazz apples,. Got my Chilean grapes, got my south African plums but we hwv to rely on the EU people say. It’s not about doom and gloom though is it. It’s about people proposing genuine concerns, such as the environmental impact of importing all our food from the other side of the country then being told that 1 ship causing less pollution than tonnes of lorries. lol
People are sick of continuously raising valid concerns regarding the implications of Brexit only to be called doom merchants or unpatriotic/undemocratic and that we should all ‘get behind this country to make things work’
The problem i have with this comment is that the UK infrastructure for this doesnt exist. This is what the UK government should have been addressing over the last 4 years. Farms are now play things for the rich to avoid tax, they are not going to suddenly start taking it upon themselves to feed the nation. In the 70s we got most of the fruit and veg from ships into Liverpool from the canaries. We got our meat from NZ. They were called refrig boats. Technology has vastly improved so it will be fine easily
Most of our fruit and veg is grown artificially in greenhouses in holland. Even now the smart farmers here are copying that. We will be ok. No need for doom and gloom
You make a valid argument. All I was saying is that in the short term prices for foodstuffs may rise. But as time goes on it will level out. We already get lots from other countries like NZ, Chile, South Africa. We will prob get more which will be cheaper. As you say farms are for the rich due to the huge sums they get from the EU. The Tories are changing that. Don't know much about their farming bill but reading about it seems better for small farmersThe problem i have with this comment is that the UK infrastructure for this doesnt exist. I like your optimism saying they might rise, unfortunately my viewpoint tells me they are. Its already being planned, we started forecasting 2021 a few months back. Bringing in more isn't as easy as just buying it unfortunately. These chains take time to bring to fruition. You make a valid argument. It's not about cheaper prices it's about getting access to that countries market. We signed a deal with Canada last week which is the same as the EU one. But we don't have to protect the farmers as much as the EU. They keep their prices high. We can get the price that we wantAll these countries you mention have trading deals set up with the EU.
Now they are all going to supply the UK at cheaper prices.
Can't see that happening.

You obviously have more knowledge on the subject than me. But when these chains come to fruition we can buy at the price we want. The EU keeps food prices high to protect their farmers. I'm pretty certain that the smart farmers will start producing more food. Anything else we need we can import it but not at the high prices we had too when we were in the EU who put tarrifs on food to protect their farmersso we should grow more of our own food whilst not protecting our farmers from competition from countries that can produce food cheaper?
