As you say farms are for the rich due to the huge sums they get from the EU. The Tories are changing that. Don't know much about their farming bill but reading about it seems better for small farmers
I think it will be better for us. I'm not trying to change anybodies mind. But I don't believe the doom and gloom that the main TV channels peddle
The farms are not even farmed anymore is more the point. When we became reliant on the EU market, many ceased to be viable. To avoid inheritance tax, land can be passed tax free. So to avoid losing millions, the rich bought farms and drove the price of land up. Smart farms are 100% the way forward, love that idea, wish I had one. I think people will begin to self source through similar means. The government should have been pushing this a lot more.

It's not about cheaper prices it's about getting access to that countries market. We signed a deal with Canada last week which is the same as the EU one. But we don't have to protect the farmers as much as the EU. They keep their prices high. We can get the price that we want

If we don't get a deal with the EU the majority of our farmers will probably be in serious trouble.

Exactly what I meant Pete. As quite clearly there isn't any problems at the moment... We got a backlog of trucks, foreign haulers/drivers don't want to come here for fear of getting stuck and that is before someone works out what paperwork to sort out once we are out of the EU that was going to lead to these kind of jams anyhow.

I said I can see how it would make leavers feel. But there's zero empathy and understanding coming back which just about sums up the leaver way.
I made a post a week or two ago calling for an extension for pretty much the same reasons you have. I didn't expect the support of leavers, but neither did I anticipate a backlash from some remainers on here

In the 70s we got most of the fruit and veg from ships into Liverpool from the canaries. We got our meat from NZ. They were called refrig boats. Technology has vastly improved so it will be fine easily
Most of our fruit and veg is grown artificially in greenhouses in holland. Even now the smart farmers here are copying that. We will be ok. No need for doom and gloom

Technology has not improved that much.

Shipping companies have only just worked out how to ship Avocados from Mexico to China on container ships, which is a 3 week journey. But apparently we’re going to source all of our fruit and veg from outside the EU.

You’re simply not being factual.

I never said we won't get stuff from the EU. We will and it will be in our and their interests to supply them. But we will be in the position to look at buying from other places if the price in the EU is too much.
Not sure about avocado but we get loads of other fresh produce from countries like Chile South Africa new Zealand so it can be done

Its product depend and logistical dependent. Certain products maintain integrity under cold temperatures, certain products deteriorate.

There’s supply chains setup around the world, shipping lanes are determined and infrastructure is in place.

You can’t pick up the phone to Maersk and go “hey lad, we’ve left the EU, launch 5 more massive ships on your shipping route next month to the U.K.”

Most of which is shipped by air, we’re back to square one.

Unless you propose we destroy the planet and breach the Paris climate change agreement we won’t ever be getting a sizeable amount of our fruit and veg from the Americas and New Zealand.

And besides, we don’t have enough airport capacity as it is.

We haven’t even got enough containers to ship product as it is, but yeah we’re going to start sending onions from New Zealand on containers that cost 10,000 USD

No need. We've got a great oven ready deal cooking away.

We've got an easy FTA waiting to be signed and let us not forget were holding ALL the cards in this negotiation.

And as we are seeing demonstrated beautifully by our current lorry park in Kent, we've got a properly functioning border with our biggest trading partner.

Why the need to extend?

I'd be very surprised if all that stuff is shipped by air. Most will be by container traffic. Im not a climate scientist but a lot can be offset. A way can befound as it always is

Right I'm off for my brunch. Think I'll have some NZ apples, plums from South Africa and dates from Morocco. Avocado and British eggs for dinner. British New potatoes and Aberdeen Angus sirloin steak for tea. Not sure whether to have a californian red or maybe a Marlborough NZ wine. Its a gloomy old world!,
