Interesting:
Just to clarify exactly
It's a container shortage - during the lockdown - all the Asian containers were shipped to the EU and to US and not returned in time. Hence some of the increase.
BUT
UK container ports have major logistics problems (i.e. lazy, inefficient and outdated) compared to their European brethren.
Felixstowe (40% of our container traffic) was so bad that 35% of slots there were wasted in November.
One of the largest MV ships in the world stopped offloading half-way thru and left Britain to continue to EU ports as it was behind schedule, where it offloaded the rest of it's cargo to return to Asia. (in mid-November) leaving UK suppliers to ship their own stuff from the EU to the UK.
This month, 5 more MV ships have decided to skip Britain altogether, unloading British cargo in the EU, compounding the problem.
Those that are delivering to the UK are charging an additional "British Congestion" fee of 1000 to 2000 per can that they're not charging our European counterparts.
Now - given that we're leaving the EU and facing logistics meltdown, our feeder ports are already at capacity and struggling. and all these UK-destined containers are sitting at EU ports getting charged demurrage fees for $300 per day - the only solution is to ship them by HGV via Dover.
But guess what. - in 3 weeks we are [Poor language removed] when it comes to RoRo via Dover.
Already we are seeing problems. Some days the queues to board at Calais are stretching along the French motorways - right along to Belgium next door!
Basically, we're facing a Perfect Storm of logistics meltdown: - a combination of Brexit, Covid, global shipping issues, British inefficiency, lack of deepwater capacity, complacency and red-tape.
