that’s not legislation, that’s a scientific paper with regards to transporting fresh water fish.

Thanks for info, was linked to it from EU site, it appears to be an agency of the EU. Hence me always attempting to link sources for further reading

So would you think if they are researching those things that legislation will follow ?

The efsa will provide guidance that does eventually support the implementation of regs, but you’re talking about and what you’re quoting are 2 completely different subjects. The EFSA document is more to do with the hygiene whereas the IUU regs, what you’re also talking about, is more the management of the fishery in accordance with the FAO fisheries policy

1% of GDP, but emotive to an island nation. It’s importance now is completely out of kilter with other economic drivers but it suits the tories to use it to clatter towards a no deal. Which was the whole point for them in the first place.

So why are the EU so het up about it ? What about the European super vessels that basically hoover up the fish, or the Dutch who electrically stun and kill them. Why do the EU allow fishing in areas identified as of being of special interest. I hope we allow small fishing vessels from the EU to fish our waters, and I hope we ban all the 300metre super vessels from our waters. Bruce posted an article the other day which I then repeated, showing how fewer and fewer people control more and more of the fishing and are earning money because of the sale and transfer of licenses. This should all be stopped. Licences should be offered on a yearly basis to those who actually fish or wish to start fishing and not to a select few who regard it as a permanent right......

Not an area of expertise for me but this would seem a fair approach. Careful monitoring of the licence granting process and subsequent policing for compliance required.

This happens in all industries though,

DIY hand power tools, 4 companies control 48% of the global market, and 18 companies have 91% of the global market, that is some serious power (excuse the pun)

UK newspapers, there are about 7* (?) companies controlling all the 19 national newspapers that are in circulation.

No matter where you look, if you look hard enough, if its a big company chances are they are under another.

Many years ago I had cause to write to the owner of a UK insurance firm, I went thorough approximately 5 different layers of companies before I got to the main man, the number of insurance company names I recognised that were part of the setup was scary

Those super vessels are disgusting but is probably more of an argument against capitalism than the Eu in my opinion. ;)

We've been decimating our fish stocks since the 50s... UK was once the Mecca of Tuna we destroyed that long before common fisheries EU etc. Lot of old Codswallop with good deal of Pollock's listening to Kippers on our fisheries...

Landing by UK trawlers have actually been in decline since the 50's according to official figures, although as you can see there has been a slight increase over the past 5 years or so

Lest we forget, it was the British industry that was selling those licenses though Pete, no one from Europe was making them do it. It was the market that the Tories are supposed to love in action. No different really to, say, Finmeccanica buying Westland :-).

Yes 50s, when we finally fished UK Tuna to extinction. And fish landing is very general and not useful, species landings much more useful. Our home water fleet was dead by 70s when we entered talks with the EU and was by then really distant only.
Jim is right there has been succession of UK government who comoditised and liberalised our fisheries, with various policies. One such is how our government have managed the licensing...
