I would have thought it was obvious by now. It's only in the eleventh hour (sometimes the twelfth) that the EUs wheels actually start turning.

This is all just posturing. It is however encouraging that the UK negotiators are not capitulating to EUs demands as Labour has long advocated.

Where is your evidence that the UK government are doing anything?

My fear is that is precisely what will happen. We've seen a national response, whether in terms of different ways of measuring, different contact tracing apps, different vaccines being developed, different procurement of equipment, or different approaches to borders. One thing the European response has not been is coordinated. Sadly, the EU hasn't covered itself in glory during the pandemic, and it's far from certain it will do in terms of the response either, with ructions already emerging regarding the financial support offered.

It’s a massive worry, which is why someone over there has to say the solution is greater union in this field; not the usual ministerial level meetings on agreeable resorts but a EU level body that can deal with things like this without having to wait.

Both negotiating parties public comments.

EU: we want fishing in this deal. UK: we won't accept fishing and want the same arrangements you have with Norway who negotiate annually for access to their fishing grounds.

EU: We want level playing field. UK: Level playing fields are not free trade agreements and the EU has this arrangement with no other external EU country.

UK: We want unlimited single market access like Swiss. EU: Not unless you sign up to ECJ. UK: No chance.

It'll all be done when the deadline is almost upon us as usual. Just like when the EU said the withdrawal agreement can't change etc etc - within sight of the deadline Boris gets them to move.

'This report says that both Theresa May and Boris Johnson failed to defend the civil service when MPs and commentators questioned its impartiality.

It says May allowed Olly Robbins, her chief Brexit negotiator, to become a target for political attacks over her controversial Brexit policy, while Johnson placed officials in an immensely difficult position by implying that he would break the law to take the UK out of the EU without a deal on 31 October 2019.'

Taking as a given that Johnson is a serial liar, the bigger question for me is what shape borders will be in during this thing. Schengen seems under immense strain at the moment, with various countries in Europe pledging to open borders for some countries, but not others. It's hugely concerning.
You mean like the UK and Ireland. We're keeping open our border, so to speak, but they've quarantining us

Given the immigration bill this week, I read an interesting paper from Rice University looking at undocumented immigrants in Texas. Long story short, it said that because these people buy stuff, and therefore contribute taxes even if not via income tax, they generate $1.21 for every $1 spent by the state in supporting them. Obviously EU migrants aren't in any way undocumented so the figure here will be even bigger. It's a good job we're not entering a period where the state needs every penny it can get.

Problem is no one really cares as long as there a less people about talking funny languages.

Read a couple of studies on immigration lately, and the general view has softened significantly since Brexit, with the pandemic adding to that trend. It's just a shame the government seem to be bludgeoning on when the appetite for them to do so among supporters is weakening.

Would imagine there are less anti-immigration stories in the press at the moment to be fair.
