It doesn’t matter. When we cut the final cord we can do what we like, as fast as we like, without the bureaucracy and anchors of the rest of the EU. Terms such as Singapore/Hong Kong on Thames, accurately describes the ability of a country such as ours to do deals and trade so much faster than the EU. This is why they are desperate to tie us down to their sclerotic rules. They know we will outperform the EU, France knows it, Germany knows it, and this is what is scaring the crap out of them. If they do not sort out a deal we should just cut and run. Our economy is stronger than theirs and the rest of the world will willingly step into the shoes of the Eu’s trade with the U.K....

And all we need to do is rip out those pesky workers rights and benefits.

Interesting point on financial services. Just to highlight that we sub a lot of work to India and the cheaper EU countries as UK employees cost too much to be competitive. What's to stop them just cutting the middle man?

And although you could argue new deals are slow, when you consider they were negotiating access to what was 28 markets, I could argue that actually the alignment makes that quick considering the size of the market on offer.

The 3 countries you state are probably the best examples. Massive cost for US trade, for sure we will have to give to get there... we'll be in their pocket for sure. China, well, see coronavirus as a good measure of why alignment is needed. And India has very low standards compared to ours. If you're happy with more expensive, lower quality goods, then yeah, it's all good.

I wish I could say more but I come from a standpoint where I have a few years experience in export. Now I produce the UK P&L for one of the worlds largest companies. I can confidently say, a no deal will mean we pay significantly more for those purchases.

If it we’re that simple then I’m sure the French or Germans would already have done so. But it isn’t is it.

How long has the Mercosur deal been going on ? When does that conclude ?

Trading with any country already involves meeting the country standards of the target market. What the EU want us to do is harmonise taxation etc and oversee it with the own courts. I mentioned those three countries because they are big and some on here seem to think big is beautiful. However I would much prefer more rather than big as it decreases risk.

I can fully understand where you come from in respect of the P&L for your company, and we all know that tariffs will add costs, but we already do so with the RoW and seem to manage ok, as I’m sure your company does too.....

This is the biggest lie of all, promulgated by the left. Why on earth would we want to remove workers rights and benefits. We already do far more than the EU. Why would we do any different ? Big and small companies are set up for this now and politically the argument has been debated and won, there is no going back.....

Honour its commitments.

Bruce, can we at least be honest and practical. The U.K. had the largest Navy, a not fit for purpose Air Force, and one of the smallest standing armies out of any major player. All the while protecting an empire covering a quarter of the globe. Now the last time I looked, Czech was landlocked, so our massive Navy could do sod all, our Air Force was neither big enough nor had the range to make a difference and our small Army would not even be able to get to the country. So please tell me exactly what the U.K. could have done, that the Germans didn’t know about, that would have made the slightest difference. I’m all ears on this one.....

There is nothing to stop the EU selling whatever they want to other countries anyway, they are not forced by anyone to sell to us. Yet we are now their single biggest market.

We all know that we don’t currently pay tariffs with the EU, but we also happen to have a bigger trade base with the ROW (where tariffs are involved) than the EU, it’s growing, profitable, and the trade balance is in our favour....

We are not their biggest market, we are still in that market!

We trade with the rest of the world from within EU, so we export as the EU currently. Through deals setup by them. The trade balance is really not in our favour. We dont have any trade with the rest of the world, the EU does, of which we are currently a part of. There is no British export, that is the whole point of Brexit, no?

You know World War II was a long time ago, and no matter how much you might fantasise about your role in it, you contributed nothing to it.

So Britain has gone from defeating the Germans single handed to being too weak and feeble to help an ally that they had pledged to help? Lest we forget, both France and Britain had pledged to help the Czechs and Poles, and had they done so then they would have brought considerably greater military muscle to bear on the problem than any of them could in isolation. Working together and a lot could have been done when Germany was comparatively weak. As it is, Britain's cold feet emboldened the French cold feet, and bugger all was done until Germany was considerably stronger.

Had a quick look at the Mercosur deal. It appears it has been active since 1999, in 2016 they entered into new negotiations to improve it. And what exactly makes you think we can get those deals through quicker?

We currently dont have any deals with anyone. We manage on deals setup with the rest of the world as part of the EU... keep throwing that line, doesn't make it any more real.

Aligning taxation simply means that we cant get an advantage over the other members by cutting tax, which is fair.

You know Pete is dressed in his finest Churchill fancy dress as he's replying to you.

Guaranteed his answer is 'we sell more to them' and 'Boris'.
