They've been telling us for the last 2 years on here that the backstop would be ditched and the EU would withdraw it's backing for the Irish government's position when push came to shove.

Today it seems that the person who was 'elected' on a promise to kick ass with the EU, has backed down and accepted the backstop (albeit with a slight change in it's wording) because the penny has finally dropped that EU weren't going to abandon their position. Some of us have been telling them this for 2 years but they wouldn't listen.

It was always all about saving his own skin for Johnson. This is about trying to get the Tory party re-elected with him at the helm and nothing else. The pursuit of power trumps everything for them. Carson's words a century ago are as true today as they were then.
Yes Mark, the ERG, the DUP, Johnson himself, they're all phoneys. May said that the deal that Johnson himself is now pushing through is a constitutional outrage, the deal knifes the DUP (who are bizarrely quiet thus far) in the back and the front. There is no principle involved in this deal, and the people on here who slated the May deal (essentially what Johnson is proposing, but even more wishy washy) should hang their heads in shame. Like Rees Mogg and Johnson themselves, the usual suspects on here mix snide replies with nonsense platitudes. Some even put YouTube videos of bands on here rather than answer serious questions. Another one whinged about a raft of things wrong with May's deal but couldn't name any of them!
Anyhow, as Mark alluded, this 'deal' demonstrates the contempt that politicians have for the people outside of elections/referendums. All principle cast aside in pursuit of a general election win. Did we expect anything else from these clowns? Self preserving idiots. I agree with @peteblue in his assertion that the current batch of MPs are the worst in memory.
Mind, it's not finalised/tabled/agreed/ratified yet! Extension anyone? If so, I look forward to a ditch inspection.....

This is much, much worse than the backstop was though (for unionists).

The backstop at least was in effect time limited (the trade deal would have superceded it) and applied to the whole of the UK; this on the other hand will be permanent and it is really difficult to come up with any reason to think why this wouldn't lead to some form of reunification within a decade or so - this can only ever be seen as the betrayal it so blatantly is, the UK is likely to end up as an economic basket case whilst NI is spared the worst of it, there is no way a trade deal will ever undo this and worst of all thousands of people will be reminded of (and get used to) this daily every time they travel between the UK and NI.

If Corbyn had said this was an option for Labour at any point after 2016, someone would have shot at him.
I meant the original NI only backstop agreed by May in December 2017 before the DUP scuppered it and and she then requested that it should be UK-wide.

So it'll be ok to surrender everything to get an election win? (surrender everythign that is except the right to drive down workers rights and impose falling safety standards on us all).

This is what I've noticed about you pete: you're thinking on politics and outcomes from it are governed by one thing only: parliamentary majorities. You'd accept just about anything to see the Tories (even this bunch of law breaking ones) get a majority in parliament.

It's not a game. It's deadly serious.

In any case, I dismiss your belief there'll be any majority for the Tories at all.

2019 or 2020 election: hung parliament territory all day long.

No mate, that’s not my thinking of what I want, just my view of what is happening. Corbyn is doing similar all based on a potential GE result and you know it.

You are right, this isn’t a game, it is deadly serious and that ridiculous Benn act will go down in history for the political opportunism it was.....

To stop the UK falling out of the EU without a deal.
I call it democracy in action

Unionists might just have accepted that as temporary at the time, if it was the price of Brexit for all - they won't now.
