lol

Just another Leaver who can't actually refute points so just makes baseless assertions they just pulled from somewhere dark and stinky then. And one that's pro-fascism to boot!

"Highest form of democracy" is it? Is there a league table somewhere? Perhaps on the Democracy Association website? Is there a cup also, contested between these varying forms of democracy?

Not quite, despite what you may read. Was the Lisbon Treaty, I think, which was originally voted down in ROI, EU made some change(s) to it, and asked them again, and they said Yes.
EXACTLY. Just what the EU are doing with GB. IS not a democracy, is an autocracy

We are a special case, and need a bespoke deal from the EU, 5th largest economy in the world is what we are, with that should come privilege when negotiating a deal, we aren't just some other tinpot EU country wanting to leave.

Unfortunately we aren't a special case. We are the only case and they won't be handing out bespoke agreements. As stated before a lot of the businesses that can move to the continent will. It's not like we will stop buying German cars because 4k extra on a 40k car isn't a big deal at the end of the day to the people who can afford it. People will still buy oranges from Spain etc. Then we look at what we provide Europe with and how much of that can be taken and produced in one of the other 27 countries. Our status as a big economy comes partly from being a member of the EU. What will it be like outside we'll have to wait and see.

Exactly my point. Thank you @roydo
What was your point? both referendums were different.
EU here's a treaty.
RoI, we're constitutionally obliged to put this to the people.
RoI, the people said no, there arent enough guarantees of neutrality or protection of national taxation levels.
EU. OK, what if we give these guarantees.
RoI. we'd have to put it to the people again.
RoI, The people said yes.

This seems like a reasonable process to me.
It's worth noting that the UK have no laws about voting on stuff like this so most politicians took the easy option and avoided voting on treaties.
It also shows how lazy and poorly thought through the Brexit referendum was.

Did not the Eurozone get the southern Irish government to carry out referenda until they got the answer they wanted? CBA looking for it but it happened.

I think, to be fair, the Irish government took that role on themselves.

The interesting thing from that period is that Farage went over to Dublin to help in the No campaign for either the Nice or Lisbon treaty.

And he shared a platform with the current Sinn Fein leader, Mary McDonald, in a televised debate with Yes politicians lol

Both Sinn Fein and Farage, strange bedfellows nowadays but very much partners in the anti EU camp back then, have tried to distance themselves from this episode and I cannot find the YouTube clip of it no moah.

It's nothing like what is happening now.
If it was, it would go like this.
UK. we want to leave, we're going to have a referendum, the people have voted to leave.
EU. ok, lets figure out how that works.
UK. great, we have an agreement.
UK. lets put that agreement to the people and see if they think it's the best way to leave.

still messy but closer to the lisbon example
