Just as the far right in Germany blamed the Treaty of Versaille for all their ills, the far right in this country blame the EU. Add in the blame game of the hostility environment towards foreigners and those who are disabled, vulnerable, poor - working and not -, and ethnic minorities. We have been governed by a government that has displayed all the hallmarks of fascistic aggressive attitudes and policies against the mass of the populus since 2010.. In the 1930's sections of the German establishment thought Hitler would save them with his 1000 year Reich populism . In the UK sections of the establishment think Johnson's New Golden Age populism will save them.

To be fair John, Versailles was indeed the catalyst for the conditions which spawned Nazism.

The reparations imposed on Germany led to the hyper-inlation which fuelled it.

Adolf was preaching to the informed converted when he made that linkage.

Add to that the great depression which hit in the wake of the Wall Street Crash and it is easy to see where WW2 came from (personally I always think WW2 was the second act of WW1 and the twenty years in between was a sort of ceasefire).

Lessons were learned from Versailles and the same mistake was not made in Yalta.

Instead we had the Marshall Plan and the eventual emergence of a nascent EU in the Common Market.

What these people have succeeded in doing is convince enough people, especially oop north, that almost twenty years of Thatcherism which ripped the industrial heart out of the country and ten years of Tory austerity which ripped the innards from their local services was the fault of the European Union.

They have found a willing audience among people ready to blame the foreigners who “took their jobs” without for one moment blaming the English employers who will happily pay buttons to a fellow from eastern Europe instead of paying an English person a proper wage.

You are right.

This is a type of fascism......Johnson is behaving as if he is a Dictator when the reality is he does not even have a majority in Westminster.

He is relying on the bigotry of one Irish political party to prop him up and the stupidity of another Irish political party to refuse to go in and help stop this coup in tracks.

That Cabinet is pure proper poisonous at a time when a Prime Minister worhy of the name shoukd be trying to unite this country by appointing a Cabinet to recognise our divisions and look for a way out.

Lob in that the Govt are planning to spend £100m on an ad campaign to make everyone aware to prepare for a No Deal. Great day.

Puts the much vaunted £9m spent on the pamphlet warning that things might be a bit tricky into some context, especially as it was all going to be so easy. @Joey66

its been a good day. Soubry, Sturgeon and assorted Remainers now all beginning to state that Boris is definitely planning on a no deal. A consistent message to the EU is exactly what is needed, no pratting around, it’s either this or it’s that.....

There will be a general election before a 'no deal'.

Why do I get the impression that this kind of airbrushing of history will be a centrepoint of this £100 million 'information campaign'?

Raab lies...

I heard that interview. Was embarrassing. The interviewer knows he’s talking guff as well, but doesn’t take him to pieces. We need accountability for lies.

Isn't that what Johnson is counting on? He's going to do a May and go for an election with no deal as the centrepoint, and if he wins it then he'll have the mandate he wants. He's banking on the remain vote being split, and a combination of no deal pulling in all the Brexit Party voters and dislike of Corbyn pulling in all the centrist Tory voters to do the trick for him.

And if we the electorate go to polls not working that ruse out more fool them, in the cold light of day democracy has spoken. I know who i'm voting, its a lent vote to oust the sitting Tory...
