No good laughing Bruce containing ourselves to the EU is stopping us dealing all over the world to get a better price , and deals.... its narrow mindedness that restricts you to be governed by the EU at a price with a 9 billion deficit every year plus they do our wto deal for us and oh the tell us how to spend the other 10 billion we throw in we are their cash cow ..... proven by the way May peed them off they would have just thrown us OUT

I'm loathe to use the dreaded l word, but that simply isn't true Joe. Very little stops British companies trading outside the EU, as my own sojourn to the States illustrates in its small way. All trade deals do is make trade easier, cheaper or both. I'm not really sure where it comes from, but this portrayal of the British as pathetic wimps being squashed by the mean Europeans is most unflattering, and does you or the wider population no favours at all.

Perhaps a conversation with a few blokes from Toyota explains it, as cooperation is a big part of how they operate, but you can only cooperate if you're confident in yourself, and trust others. Both of those qualities seem rather low, or in David Davis' case, unduly high on the first and dangerously low on the second. It's really sad to see Britain wallowing like this though.

For some reason we never seemed to do to well with developing day to day family cars - sports cars, 4x4s we were world class at, but standard day to day production models we were always second best for some reason.

A number of our in-laws work at Skoda, and it's perhaps a parable for our time that they were considered a laughing stock when they were an insular Czech-only brand, yet are now sufficiently well thought of (and seem to be going great guns commercially) when they work with VW. Had they remained a Czech only brand, I suspect towns like Mlada Boleslav (think Skoda town) would be a sorry state.

We trade worldwide Bruce with the EUs permission they sit on the WTO on our behalf......
So in total 57% of our exports and 66% of our imports happen with countries we have some trade agreement with as part of the EU. The EU has also negotiated or is in the process of negotiating trade deals with other countries, including Japan and Australia.
We are in their pocket Bruce they negotiate for us we are not independent......

No, we don't Joe. Trade deals can be viewed of as the rules of the game, they're not the game itself. British companies don't need to ask Brussels permission before they trade with Timbuktu.

There is a tirade going on there it was late calling people cretins etc ERG they are trying to do what 17.4 million voted for - the other MPs are over 500 of them voted article 50 to leave through then changed their minds for their own aims ...... the UK is in a mess all the MPs have let us down imo.....

Are you backing out of your lies now?

It’s actually incredible when you look back at the absolute disaster that was the British car industry in the 60s & 70s and see some of the absolutely maddening errors that effectively brought the industry down. British Leyland’s way of working was incredibly archaic, there was no thought about creating mass produced models (and those that were had to be rushed through and were terrible) as well as two of the marquees effectively competing against each other, with both being beaten by foreigners. Didn’t want to learn from Johnny foreigner either.

Hmm, lack of forward planning, rushed ideas and being laughed at by those outside the country. Sounds familiar.

Indeed, you could even compare Rover of the 90s with JLR today. From what I understand, the Nissan plant is highly thought of, as are various other plants around the UK. I don't really get this insular desire to shut out any foreigners, either in terms of their person, their investment or their ideas. The world thrives when it's open and inter-connected. Heck, for most of human history, China and the Arab world were streets ahead of Europe in terms of science and technology, but both took the insular path whereas Europe reached out across the world.
