Having worked across the world in conflict resolution, this is absolutely the case. It's education and experience of 'others' that reduce hostility.

The saddest thing is you have May and her hostile environment and Trump with his wall rhetoric fueling this notion that 'the other' is here to do harm. These are supposed to be responsible people, yet they behave in a reprehensible way.

Always the victim, it's never their fault.

Such an attitude towards MPs, "us vs them" and stereotyping them all the same - is ... well, similar to;

Notice how he isn't using the opportunity to rebut.

He's also pretty free to throw around accusations and false statements when it suits him, yet is unhappy with someone reading back his position at him.

The simple and adult think to do is to say 'we are entitled to do what we think is the best given the parameters of what we are faced with'. But he's in a marginal seat so needs to go with the direction that the wind is blowing.

I'm more concerned about the way broadcasters are going in this country mate.

They're becoming increasingly about the individual, the presenter and an agenda/narrative. Increasingly American.

Play the ball, not the man.

Interestingly, a similar thing occurs with cyclists (bare with me). A new study (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.trf.2019.03.005 if you're interested) has basically found that many Top Gear loving whoppers motorists regard cyclists as 'subhuman', which then influences how they behave towards them on the road. A big part of the problem is that they don't actually know any cyclists so this mirage can emerge. It's only when they actually meet cyclists and see that they're normal people that they start behaving more responsibly towards them.
Maybe we should meet, get together, dispel a few myths and stereotypes, put them to bed as it where, in a strictly figuratively manner obvs...@Bungle can arrange it, when he recovers.
