Yes mate, agreed, but i'd take the stronger version. We need infrastructure for our current population, but it would be irresponsible to keep on increasing it indefinitely.

I don't think it will grow indefinitely mate, but to run something by you. The UK has roughly 40 million overseas tourists per year. You can probably also add in a few million who come for business. Obviously these are short-term trips, yet the country is able to absorb this ebb and flow of people reasonably well. Would you not agree?

I mean London has a residential population of what, 9 million? I dare say it has a few million more when you consider those who commute in from outside and are visiting as tourists. I'm not sure anyone would regard Oxford Street or London Bridge tube in rush hour as any kind of fun, but the city fares pretty well, and large parts are still pretty quiet.

My own view is that the Govt should have got a cross party group together that would also include top civil servants, European law specialists and some top people from Industry and Finance, to come up with a detailed plan for Brexit, before we voted to invoke article 50.

I'm not sure how this would have helped the 48% who still wanted to remain in the EU. What do you think the Govt should have done.

Like you a cross party group was the way to go in my opinion . The rush to invoke article 50 is a huge part of the reason we’re in this mess and something I’ve mentioned previously, and been shouted down as if it was prevaricating to avoiding leaving and wasn’t by the way . Like you I just wanted us to try and get all our ducks in a row. I put that issue again to the perception of May being a remainer and her desire to pander to the leave vote both inside and outside her party . I honestly think a leaver might have been able to be a bit more considered

my point on the figures is we hear this 17.4m million repeated like a mantra , illustrated in this thread ,but 16.1m voted to remain . Any sensible government should have considered the nature of that vote when making its decisions . I’m not saying not leave , obviously, but why not be inclusive even if you’re not going to ultimately consider their opinion then at least make them feel you have and again exactly as you say have a cross party group picking a way out of Europe if that’s what we’re doing not this meaningless “Brexit means Brexit “ tosh.

Population is largely leveling off anyway, simply because birth rates are falling across the world. You'll get extremists who will say Muslims are breeding a takeover or that we'll live forever and therefore need another planet for all the people or other weird conspiracy nonsense, but the population growth of the 20th century won't be seen in the 21st. That's a global picture of course, but protected borders has its roots in nationalism, which I just find very odd indeed, especially in this day and age.
Cart before horse maybe, nationalism has its roots in protected borders perhaps. Besides, my personal position is pro-devolved power.

Yes, on a micro-analysis, yet stepping back and looking at the bigger picture of pollution and ecosystem collapse, it's not as rosy as the man on the Clapham omnibus perceives it to be.

Indeed, and it's been discussed numerous times how the centralised nature of governance in the UK makes it hard for local communities to adapt to changes in their population. As is so often the case though, that's a problem of our making.

For sure. I'm not advocating a Trumpian stance of pollute and be damned, just that the most practical way to be more sustainable is to make our existing lifestyle more sustainable, whether that's a better approach to plastics/packaging, renewable forms of energy or smarter transportation. I've had a few conversations with people who subscribe to the overpopulation line of thinking and their solutions are nearly always pretty dark.
