“In 1972, when Heath decided to take Britain into the Common Market, he used Parliament's legal sovereignty to deny and permanently limit the political sovereignty of the electorate. Heath and Parliament changed the basic rules and they did not have the right (legal or moral) to do that. The 1972 European Communities Bill wasn't just another Act of Parliament. Heath's Bill used Parliament's legal sovereignty, and status as representative of the electorate, to deny the fundamental rights of the electorate”

“Attempts through the courts to annul our membership of the European Union on the basis that Parliament acted improperly have failed because Parliament, through its legal sovereignty, is the source of the law in Britain and the courts are, therefore, unable to challenge any Parliamentary Act”.

There you go Joey, I saved you the trouble of reading all that guff and just highlighted the salient legal point above.

In a nut shell, the Prime Minister used existing British political structures for his own advantage as he was procedurally allowed to do so.

He was a Pratt ........a Tory one too.......who bit the dust .....very quickly ......

But he was legally and procedurally correct in his actions in bringing the U.K. into the E.U.

Way before my time but I note that Tories today still have the qualities you spelt out ;)

Just saying..
We were in the common weailth cheaper food it was just a trade deal which was very expensive nothing changes untill the polictical union without a vote took over - then we had a referendum 2016 long awaited I may add - now people want it reversed?...........not democratic from day one as I posted Ted Heath started the rot......

I’m just countering your suggestion that the U.K. is not actually in the E.U.

Regarding a new referendum, if the people want it then that is democracy.

For context, Irish Nationalist political commentators are a little divided on the issue of a new referendum. Those opposed to it are for the reason that the backstop could be removed as a solution and it is at least something for us to cling to now in the face of Brexit.

The fringe of the sect of the IRA have never ever gone away even in peacetime so let's blame Brexit.....
You just countered your own assertion.

I am not suggesting that Brexit has caused dissident Republicanism but I am telling you that it will fuel it’s ideology. It is the border thread and an arms find on the border is noteworthy in this thread, particularly given what the security experts have been warning us all of recently.

*edit, just realised this isn’t the border thread

You have fetched the IRA into a Brexit debate not me........

Fetching the IRA into Brexit is a new one on this thread .....
Don’t make me do the vaults Joey.

Seriously, have you followed any news at all about Ireland and Brexit and the fears people have re changes to the current status?

You are no stranger to the Border thread and act surprised that NI conflict is mentioned in the E.U. thread despite it being discussed daily on this very site!

I don’t get it.

So, shock horror, the fault really lay with the British politicians rather than European ones?
