Seems like Brussels is actually pushing towards a “hard” Brexit.

I mean I don’t blame them for negotiating hard - May didn’t have to agree to any of it and must have known her deal would never fly in parliament (unless she really is that clueless/deluded).

But the refusal to alter one jot now means that we are edging ever closer to the fabled hard, cliff-edge, batten-the-hatches-and-stock-up-on-tinned-goods-and-shotgun-cartridges “no deal” WTO Brexit.

And the planes shall verily fall from the skies.

Of course, they will no doubt greatly fear the admittedly minuscule likelihood of any country leaving and actually being successful - pour encourager les autres...
They are bluffing the German and French car industries would suffer much more than ours ....... and if it was on WTO tariffs they would be billions out of pocket to us.....

This is not true, they would be happy with a soft brexit. The problem is we are trying to alter the backstop, but without that there is a backdoor to the EU market through NI.

The point is, the Brexit was so soft that it was Remain in all but name. With no say going forward. And a lock-in. In other words, a deal that nobody in their right mind would sign up to.

Which was kind of my point.

I agree with you there, but that is the UK trying to make it sound like it was a firm brexit and not the EU. If the UK wanted to remain in the customs union/single market the it would be simple. Because we don't and we want NI to be treated in the same way as the rest of mainland Britain then we are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Agree with all of that.

My only point was that UK is not Greece and is unlikely to back down - in fact if anything it looks like leave sentiment is hardening - hence, if the EU secretly would like to see a Brexit-to-WTO, they are going about it the right way.

Ha don't know why that duplicated!

And amazingly May took the bait there and has backpeddled, setting out the vote for w/c 14 January.

A rare well done for Corbyn.

Tbh I don't think she had a choice. The deal isn't going to change much and if she left it any longer she would have had a bigger backlash than now.

Just a shame it is still 4 weeks away. May must be praying for a Christmas miracle.
