i agree with bits of it, but its more a leadership opening bat by him than a call to arms over Brexit he was a remainer right through the vote.
importantly it signals the way they are judging the feeling to be among there own supporters, judging by the opening day speeches, its for a harder stance on negotiations, or maybe a ploy to signal to the EU that it has pushed the wrong buttons, better to have May to deal with than someone more else with more firm views on the subject.
Posturing for the leadership can't stand him.......

MayBot in full swing - hear the word "border", reply with preset answer.

She's truly awful.
The Tories need to get rid of her asap her chequers deal - the EU reject it - the opposition reject it- her own party brexiteers, and some remainers reject it .......
She was exactly the same at the Home office - useless .......
No logic in it other than to try and aim for a no deal Brexit which no one wants other than the far right in her party ...
Her idiology is madness beyond extreme - Boris may plan the scene to get rid of her - and a unknown outsider may get the leadership......
The clock is against all this, but she will backtrack as always to save her own neck for now?......

Unsure if posted. Been out of this thread a while but this just sums up the frustration I feel with politicians being weasels that would rather give the same perfectly prepared non-answer than answer the question being asked.

From the Brexiteers of the Tory government to the Brexiteers of GOT, nobody can square the Ireland circle. They can skirt around it, and mouth some meaningless platitudes, but this interview sums up the entire position. They all aspire to a solution, but are terrified to veer from their mantras. Clueless clowns who did not consider that an open border in Ireland would allow free movement from the EU when they were pitching their nonsense.

Nobody can come up with a solution because there just isn’t one, not that satisfys the nationalist and unionist communities whilst fulfilling the demands of existing agreements or statutory requirements of desired ones and That’s without considering the Brexiteers in all this.

Obviously something will have to give but firstly it’s going to require the government to be honest and whatever happens there are going to be some very angry people. angry people and the island of Ireland’s political situation is not an ideal combination.

Correct, but does the government, and indeed the people of Great Britain, really care about what happens to Northern Ireland? Don't forget, the current Secretary of State for NI knew absolutely nothing about the place when she got the job! What does that tell you about the people who make the appointments? Ireland remains the stone in Britain's shoe and is the reason why this withdrawal negotiation is such a disaster. Arlene may not last much longer with this RHI scandal, so it's to be hoped that any successor to her will have a bit of common sense and allow for a differentiation between NI and GB in their customs arrangements. After all, they applied for such status during the mad cow disease crisis.

Just one reason why Hunt's comments where despicable and desperate in equal measure.

It appals me no end that this perennial failure has any position in government.

He made a valid point. The USSR did everything it could to stop ‘members’ leaving. Doing other comparisons of who the Soviets murdered is as productive as stating the numbers killed or murdered by Germany in WW2, it’s not relevant....

Reaction to Hunt's comment:

The comment was denounced as "unworthy of a British Foreign Secretary" by the former head of the UK's diplomatic service, Lord Ricketts, while his successor as the Foreign Office's Permanent Secretary, Simon Fraser, described it as a "shocking failure of judgement".

German Europe minister Michael Roth told the Foreign Secretary: "Sorry, Jeremy Hunt, the EU is no prison!"

And a European Commission spokesman said: "I would say, respectfully, that we would all benefit, and in particular foreign affairs ministers, from opening a history book from time to time. That's the only comment I have."

Meanwhile, Latvia's ambassador to the UK retorted that the EU had brought her country "prosperity, equality, growth, respect" after decades in which the Soviet Union ruined the lives of its people.

And Estonia's ambassador in London, Tiina Intelmann, described Mr Hunt's comments as "insulting" to those who lived under Soviet domination before the collapse of the communist regime in 1991.

This is from a government minister who is supposedly trying to make peace with the EU; seems he is trying to start a war with them instead.

The government have tried being nice and reasonable and got nowhere, a bit of anger every now and again won’t do any harm.......

The Soviet Union didn't have Article 50 - there wasn't an option of leaving. The Baltic states didn't 'opt in' - they were annexed via ultimatum. I don't even need to bring up the death camps and so on becaused there is no point of comparison between the USSR and the EU in any way beyond the word 'union' in their titles.

The UK is free to leave - they can crash out on 'no deal' at any point they want. What it's not free to do is have its' cake and eat it. The EU has a right to protect its' interests.

What you are doing here is demonstrating that you are an ideological extremist. You are foolish. I don't say that lightly, but if you actually think what Hunt said is a 'valid point', then you're a fool who either knows nothing about the subject matter or knows it but doesn't give a toss.
