'Bad boys' are back: India doubles down on coal as heatwave worsens power crisis

MUMBAI, May 6 (Reuters) - India is planning to reopen more than 100 coal mines previously considered financially unsustainable, as a heatwave-driven power crisis forces the world's third-biggest greenhouse gas emitter to double down on the fuel after months of low consumption.

State-run Coal India (COAL.NS), which accounts for 80% of domestic coal output, saw production fall for two straight years ended March 2021 mainly due to a lack of demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. India also pushed utilities to cut imports of coal used for power generation to zero during that period.

I've been inspired by the Just Stop Oil protesters to start my own movement protesting illegal channel crossings. It's called "Just Stop Migrants".

I'm off down to Dover to sabotage some RNLI life boats and to glue myself to the jetty. Wish me luck lads. Hopefully the rozzers will leave the gates open and make me nice cup of tea like the other lot. Cheerio!

We need optimism – but Disneyfied climate predictions are just dangerous

Techno-utopianism is popular precisely because it doesn’t challenge the status quo, and lets polluters off the hook

In seeking to prevent environmental breakdown, what counts above all is not the new things we do, but the old things we stop doing. Renewable power, for instance, is useful in preventing climate chaos only to the extent that it displaces fossil fuels. Unfortunately, new technologies do not always lead automatically to the destruction of old ones.

Rising sea levels ‘mean some coastal towns will have to be abandoned’

Head of Environment Agency to warn of ‘inconvenient truth’ that some UK coastal communities ‘cannot stay where they are’

Plenty of environmental chaos out there like, from multiple crop failures, droughts, stuff collapsing and a few emerging lurgies, but the MIL reckons our particular weather's a good thing 'cos some people pay hundreds of pounds to fly for these temperatures.

That's okay then, try continually physically working through the day at these temps after starting to scythe at 0530hrs. The first few hours of scything are lush like, with the dew and all, but as soon as the Sun warms the fields up and it's time to spread the grass out thinly in the meadows it starts sapping energy like crazy and the working day's just starting...
