Couldn‘t have been, we hadn’t invented Global Warming / Climate Change then…….
"Alright, the Earth has only one mechanism for releasing heat to space, and that’s via (infrared) radiation. We understand the phenomenonperfectly well, and can predict the surface temperature of the planet asa function of how much energy the human race produces. The upshot isthat at a 2.3% growth rate (conveniently chosen to represent a 10×increase every century), we would reach boiling temperature in about 400 years."

Great three-part documentary on PBS's Frontline. It's called "The Power of Big Oil." Shows how the oil industry changed its stance on climate change. Back in the late 70s/early 80s Exxon was doing all sorts of research on climate change, and also had branches in their company looking at solar power, nuclear power, etc. The climate scientists at Exxon all produced results showing the climate was likely heating up due to a greenhouse effect. Things started to change in mid/late 80s with a change in leadership at Exxon, and the new CEO cut all these programs and started to change the messaging regarding what Exxon scientists were finding. Around this time, some politicians like Gore were making climate/environment issue a political issue, and talking about new taxes on oil, carbon caps, etc. So the industry (and Koch brothers) leveraged things like the Cato Institute and (later) the Global Climate Coalition to start a misinformation campaign, repeating tropes about "uncertainty" "more data" and finding counter-voices. They also started a seeming "grassroots" campaign (though this was all funded by big oil) to go after politicans who might support climate change laws/initiatives. In all, a very effective campaign of misinformation.

And what's funny (or sad) was that this campaign was so effective that these thinktanks/organizations don't need to engage in that much misinformation these days. So effective was their campaign that they've duped enough common citizens to carry on this misinformation campaign for them via youtube, facebook, twitter. Imagine being an ordinary citizen, making an average salary, and spending part of your day spreading misinformation to further line the pockets of wealthy CEOs and corporate petrol-interests.

I do like it when the old boys use their memories in the face of all statistical data.

I like it when all the kids try to use recent stats based on todays science, which doesn’t really have a clue. Yesterdays science informed us in graphic terms that we were entering a new Ice Age…that went well…..

Good point mate. Things are a-okay and science is, and always has been, an absolute wham fest.

No, my point being that science evolves, develops and learns. If you believe that todays science is now at its ultimate peak then fair enough. I happen to believe they have a long way to go yet, and an awful lot to learn…..

That's why, yanno, it's yesterday's science. We didn't look in the sky and decide the Earth was the centre of the universe and leave it at that did we Pete?

No, I didn’t say that. Yesterdays science got it wrong. Why do we think todays science has got it right, when there is still so much we don’t understand….
So we should just disregard everything and go back to curing everything with leeches and incense?

Science isn't linear and we have more and better technology and understanding of things than we did 10 years ago, let alone more. Just like how we discovered and utilised (and also weaponised) nuclear within less than a decade, you know?

Also the ice age example is fairly uninformed, but seeing as you lived in the golden age of everything there's no need to show you what is meant.
You basically believe the clickbait of the time, well done.

Ahh...this ole chestnut...

And you believe the clickbait of today…there really is no difference…just a different time within a journey of discovery….

Yeah cuz the "clickbait of today" has a lot more information to back it up and no one is saying there's an ice age within the next 10 years. You can and should still read up on the current times and ice age(s) though, it'd be good for you, even if you won't comprehend it on purpose.

Is the clickbait of today the fact that there are no longer 4 seasons, coinciding with smog everywhere? Or that we have temperatures in extremes in places where there never were for 100s of years? Or the fact that the sea levels are rising? Not really clickbait if I can see all of those things with my own eyes, is it?

Or is it not global warming because it used to be warm back in the day as well? Or do you just see the word "warming" and assume something completely dumb because of one word?
