People stopped calling climate change 'global warming' about a decade ago because it was incorrect to only focus on the heat. But to answer your question, I would guess that its more likely to make headlines because heat tends to accompany severe weather systems; storms, droughts and wildfires.

In fairness the coldest Antartica winter on record is a substantial record to have been broken regardless of what it means for climate change, if the warmest day ever in Antarctica is major news happened last February then why isn't the coldest 6 month period on record major news? Media trip over themselves to report warming.. is a bit of unbiased reporting too much to ask?

The hottest places on earth aren't the equator and yes the hottest places on earth do make the news when records are broken.. Australia, Turkey, India Spain, Italy, Southern States of the US, Mexico and a number of Middle Eastern countries have all made major news due to heat.

I thought the hottest places on Earth were generally between the tropics rather side of the equator?

I don't trust elites to not fly though. They'd get round it by saying it's for 'work'. It would essentially be a ban on the working class.
