I’m in two minds about the whole thing.

On the one hand I agree with you. Celebrity aside, the idea of a points system for resource is harrowing.

On the other hand, consumption at its current level will destroy the planet and so we all are ultimately contributing millions, if not billions, of deaths eventually.

So something does need to be done about consumption. There is going to have to be some control over that aspect of things. And whilst that could be argued as lack of ‘freedom’, I think that control is necessary if we want to be here in 100 years.

It needs to be top down solutions, not bottom up. Responsibility shouldn't be on the individual to suffer as their capacity for a solution to this is extremely limited. It's up to governments and corporations to mitigate the damage over the next 50+ years - Average Joe in Liverpool recycling a tin can does absolutely nothing.

I’d argue it needs both top down and bottom up solutions.

We all need to take accountability for it.

The problem with top down solutions is they are much more likely to reduce freedoms and seem authoritarian. Rationing being an example.

Average joe doing the things he can to reduce his own carbon footprint is part of it though. Eating less meat, buying fewer things, choosing public transport, recycling. If all average joes did that then the effects would be meaningful in aggregate.

People are just used to waste. How often do they upgrade their phones for example? How often do they get a new car.

If people don’t want to see freedoms removed then they really do need to take some personal responsibility. Without that responsibility those top down solutions will be more authoritarian than they would probably wish.

Again though, rather than having some ill-informed celebrity as our point of reason, one could listen instead to someone like Ellen Macarthur, who has done so much to advance the notion of a circular economy, which would make our current lifestyle that much friendlier.

For instance, it has been estimated that there is around $7 trillion of valuable material tied up in plastic waste alone. That's the whole point of the circular economy is that it shifts our mindset away from viewing waste as a useless byproduct of something valuable and into something valuable that can be reclaimed and reused.

100% this, been arguing this for years. Individuals won't change unless they have to.

I want to change, I really do, but I can't. I can't afford an electric car. There aren't any charging points anyway. I don't own a house that I can better insulate or install Pvs, heat pumps etc. Even if I did, its probably unaffordable. I cycle and walk as much as I can, I try to eat less meat, I recycle, but that's nowhere near enough to turn this around. Even if I sat at home and did next to nothing my carbon footprint will likely be over my personal allowance to halt this.

First and foremost we need to be energy self sufficient with renewables. That won't happen until government pump huge sums of money into huge infrastructure projects. Relying on the markets to shift quickly enough isn't going to solve the issue either imo.

You can invest in solar projects if you want to

That's all well and good, but again this is relying on the individual to solve this mess. I'm risk adverse when it comes to investments. I'm not clued up on investing and finance in all honesty, so it's not something that's I'd comfortably go out and do. I suspect most people are the same.

Then it probably doesn't matter enough?
