Horrifying. Genuinely shuddered reading this at how she can casually advocate authoritarianism over daily lives and clearly expect a round of applause for it.
Reduction of waste through reduction of consumption is not a bad thing, but she's looking at it in the worst possible way to affect the consumer.
Decades of consumerism and planned obsolescence has normalised replacing machines and devices every couple years.
She might be right in that legislation is needed, but aimed toward the tech giants like Apple, not at the public.

It's Joanna Lumley though. Why would anyone ask her about climate policy, much less take her seriously? I mean an alternative is that you listen to, like, experts...

Well you can’t grow concrete
You can!
....
See you Cameron
When I was a kid the UK used to grow the best concrete in the world bar none. Look at us now. I wouldn't have any idea where the nearest concrete farm is to me. The EU subsidies put paid to that and family businesses that had survived for generations were put on the scrap heap. Most summers until I was around 12 me and my mates used to work on the concrete harvest at the local farm. Best days of my life. Most of the lads have passed away now, mostly due to terminal lung disease that the left wing scum have always blamed on breathing in concrete dust. Never did me any harm, although I can't walk more than 30 feet now unaided.

lol I’ll reserve judgment until I hear what Dawn french has to say on the matter. Has anyone contacted Ben Elton to ask his opinion on wood burning stoves?

It's important what people like that say publicly as they act as a bellweather of public acceptableness. They generally don't say anything if it'll risk their careers. So yes, whilst obviously Joanna Lumley is uninformed about.... well, absolutely everything ever, it is still telling that she felt comfortable enough to suggest something like that publicly.

I’m in two minds about the whole thing.

On the one hand I agree with you. Celebrity aside, the idea of a points system for resource is harrowing.

On the other hand, consumption at its current level will destroy the planet and so we all are ultimately contributing millions, if not billions, of deaths eventually.

So something does need to be done about consumption. There is going to have to be some control over that aspect of things. And whilst that could be argued as lack of ‘freedom’, I think that control is necessary if we want to be here in 100 years.
