ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

We're all clear that this picture is from 2011, yeah?

Right, admission time. I used to buy the S*n. Like, every morning. I had no idea I shouldn't be buying it. Until I actually read up on Hillsborough, I had no idea what they'd done. This, unfortunately, is the norm around the country, everywhere outside the North West.

Now that I do know, I'm as vocal a supporter of the boycott as anyone and am just as disgusted by what was written as the next man. I won't however, leap to judgement of someone who was in the same position as me.
Well said. People outside of Merseyside don't view the paper in the same light and the fact it's one of the most popular in the country is testament to that. The picture will cause a little embarrassment because people won't be levelheaded about it but all the guy has done is stand for a charity backed by a paper. He's unlikely to know its THE paper that will get him in trouble for a job he didn't know he was getting.

Doesn't matter what job he was doing, he's involved with football at the highest level, to act as if he didn't know perfectly well the scandal around Hillsborough is ridiculous. He ignored that though, because it wasn't important until he was managing Liverpool. He would have known perfectly well about the Sun's involvement, their front page was talked about repeatedly for years, well before 2011.

World Cup winning defender Marco Materazzi, who was once managed by Benitez, said this about him:

“If I were the president of a club, I would not entrust him with my team. What I didn’t like about him at Inter was how he introduced himself to the group. A great coach, like Jose Mourinho or (former Juventus and Italy boss) Marcello Lippi, used unwritten rules within the squad, while Benitez wanted to write down 10 or 12 rules. It was like the highway code, or being at school.â€￾

A guy from Ireland, living in Wales, once wore a T-shirt with the name of an English newspaper on it. Sorry, I don't see how that is news.

Im afraid I agree. Millions of people read the sun everyday when it was still going. They were not all carts, just not associated with Merseyside or it's football teams.

We look a little small time clinging on to this picture imo

..........whilst taking part in a charity expedition sponsored by said paper.

I'm all for having a pop at kopites, but this is a non story & some of the comments on this thread regarding it, are cringeworthy in their moralising.

It does matter. It matters a lot what job he was doing. Hillsborough is quite unlikely to be the first thing that runs through his mind when he is championing a charity for a sadly very popular newspaper.

Well, I wasn't going to come in on this again but...

If it's moralising and cringeworthy to have a go at Rodgers for wearing that t-shirt is it now ok to post links to the Sun? Afterall, it's just a paper that backs charities. Or maybe it'll be deemed ok for OOTs to post links to it but not Scousers? I wonder if we can get clarification on this?

Behave Dave, climb down off that high horse lad, you'll get vertigo

It's not a high horse. I'm looking for consistency.

Genuine question: Is it ok to link to the Sun now?

It's side tracking the discussion, that's what it is.

The issue at hand was Rodgers pictured wearing a S*n T shirt on a charity expedition sponsored by that paper a year before he took over at the ****e. The criticism of him for it is OTT & is using a sensitive issue to 'points score' against the current manager of the ****e imo.

If you're that 'enraged' by it then carry on mate, I've made my point, so I'm done.

From all that ^^^ I'd hazard a guess and say that your answer to the question set would be 'no. it's not alright to link to the Sun'.

If so, why? Is it excusable for a football manager to associate with that paper but not us?
