ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

I dont think the result at the Bernabeu is in doubt. Real Madrid win that.

The real issues are:

1) how much Liverpool concede, because GD may well be crucial in this group. For that reason gnashers will park the bus and hope to keep it down to a single goal or two - and he has 'permission' to do that from a fanbase who expect nothing more than a hiding.

2) what happens in the other group game. If there's no winner in that game, Liverpool will be laughing their bollocks off at having their fate well within their own hands - even after two losses to Madrid. Only falling a point behind the other two teams: they'd have snatched at that before the two Madrid fixtures were faced.

There needs to be two wins in that group tonight for this to be anything like funny.

It hardly matters. Even if they get out of the group, they'll be bummed by the first decent team they play in the KO stages. And compared to Liverpool, all of the remaining CL teams are decent.

I dont know. If you get out of the group stage it really is a lottery. Not saying they'd make it beyond the QFs, but if they did get to that stage it'd be a real boost to Liverpool. Imo, they need turfing out before the round of 16 to stop any momentum building for them.

One way or another they'll get beat by 4 or more goals, if he's pissing about and leaves Sterling, Gerrard, Johnson and Balotelli all on the bench it could get really ugly.

Like it or not the RS are still a decent scalp to take in a european competition and Ronaldo and the rest will want to put down a marker.

Them having their fate "within their own hands" and them actually grasping said chance are two different doggies, Dave.

I can't see them beating Basle nor can I see them beating that other wee team away.

But as I fully expect Madrid to beat both the other teams then two draws after tonight would take the RS through, if my mental arithmetic is right.

Or maybe not.....if Basle draw their next two games and lose to Madrid then, assuming Liverpool lose tonight, the RS would need to win in wherever that other team comes from.

I think that's right but feel free to correct me.

Ah, screw it.....just go for it tonight, Basle and put the buggers out their misery at The Pit.

So whats the point in getting into the CL then if your going to go to one of the best stadiums in the world against the best team in Europe to rest players and throw the towel in

Pathetic actions from a pathetic club

I wonder will UEFA take action against the RS for disrespecting the competition by fielding a 'weakened' team. Oh wait. Not having Johnson, Gerrard, Sterling and Balotelli may actually make them a 'better' team.

Liverpool need at least 4 points after tonight if/when they get beat to stand a chance of progressing.

If Ludogrets win and then take a point off Liverpool at home, I think that sees Liverpool right up against it needing better GD plus the three points at home to Basel. That could be a nightmare scenario for them, leaving them exposed to the kind of counter Basel do well.

I can more realistically see Basel winning tonight though. If they do, they go three points clear of Liverpool and they'll get their noses in front of Liverpool on GD. I do think they might struggle though with Madrid at home and Liverpool away.

But either of them are better than a draw in the Basel-Ludogrets match. That'd leave Liverpool in a decent position with the Madrid fixtures out the way, even though they would be bottom of the group after tonight.
