ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

@GuillemBalague reporting that Sterling, Balotelli, Gerrard & Johnson will all be left out of the #LFC team tonight.

Tbf leaving out the last three of those chaps is hardly a brave move and they should probably be dropped anyway. Plus sterling is probably feeling sleepy.

Liverpool need at least 4 points after tonight if/when they get beat to stand a chance of progressing.

If Ludogrets win and then take a point off Liverpool at home, I think that sees Liverpool right up against it needing better GD plus the three points at home to Basel. That could be a nightmare scenario for them, leaving them exposed to the kind of counter Basel do well.

I can more realistically see Basel winning tonight though. If they do, they go three points clear of Liverpool and they'll get their noses in front of Liverpool on GD. I do think they might struggle though with Madrid at home and Liverpool away.

But either of them are better than a draw in the Basel-Ludogrets match. That'd leave Liverpool in a decent position with the Madrid fixtures out the way, even though they would be bottom of the group after tonight.

The upside of Basle being beaten in that last game is that RS finishing bottom of the group is now a possibility were it didn't appear so at any time before that.

Agree on Johnson and possibly Balotelli but Emre Can is not showing he is any better than Gerrard at the moment.

Think dropping your captain for such a game, unless he is clearly a worse choice than your other options, sends the wrong message to the team.

I can understand the practicality of it but the whole "resting your players in the CL so you can qualify for the CL" is a bit sad to me.
crackers mate, all the brickbats that Mccarthy got when he rested players at UTD because he wrote the game off. Loads of abuse came from those whoppers at the time. What have they got to say now?

Let's look at what has changed since their last Mortal Kombat:

1: The previous 3-0 stroll happened at Anfield. Tonight, it's in the Bernebeu

2: Ronaldo is positively salivating at the chance of breaking Raul's European record and putting some more gloss on his place as one of the game's all time greats.

3: Gareth Bale is fit again. Ancellotti's selection headache is between Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez. Rodgers' selection headache is Glen Johnson or Javi Manquillo.

4: At Anfield, Madrid had one eye on the imminent Barcelona fixture at the weekend. This weekend, it's Rayo Vallecano.

5: Liverpool have gotten worse. Real Madrid have gotten better.

Their whoppers love statistical breakdowns so I've plotted their chances on this useful graph:

You could be right about the big names being dropped but I have my doubts..I can't see Rodgers taking away their opportunity to play at the Bernabeu on a CL night, they might not get that chance again. Even Sturridge travelled and he's not even match fit, just wants to be there.

It's a disgrace. I dont buy into the starstruck Galacticos nonsense myself, but that's a game you need to put your best foot forward in. Even he said a few days ago that these are the games you have ambition to play in...then he rests a third of the team.

He's all over the place.
