Lets be honest it could have been a lot more than 5.
Not really. They only had 8 shots. Nice to see Howard kept up his abysmal record of saving only around half of shots on target -- the worst amongst PL goalkeepers. He's beaten so often from long range that you can only conclude that there's something wrong with his technique or agility. And there's no such thing as an unstoppable 30 yard shot.

The number of times we come up short in Europe because of naiveté is truly galling. Sporting Lisbon - completely boss them at home winning 2-0 with seconds to play (should really be more), one terrible back pass later it's two one and the second leg is a completely different proposition. Fiorentina is a tie we also should have won. Both of those team were our equals though in terms of quality and it was nip and tuck, Kiev are not a great side but we just let them score five past us with ease.

Everton are always a story of missed opportunities:

1. We could have finished the tie in those last 20 mins at Goodison when Kiev were dead on their feet but we were not clinical enough.

2. We spurn 2 or 3 easy opportunities to put players through on goal with a simple ball over the top when they had a really high defensive line at 0-0. Again not clinical enough.

3. We equalise and look like the team that is most likely to score next for the next 5 mins. If we do its game over. Instead we give away two of the worst goals you will ever see from a premier league team in the next 5 mins. Lack of concentration/professionalism/organisation. The second goal came from our own corner (terrible delivery obvs) FFS and we somehow ended up 3 on 3. Just crazy.

4. Why is Martinez scared to make subs at half time? We could all see that the formation/tactics/players were wrong but even at half time we still had a chance to win the tie as Kiev are not a great team. Instead persist with what we know is not working and go 5 down.

Well drilled teams do not concede five goals to teams live Kiev.

He made a cracking save in the first half but I agree. He get beaten from distance far too often for it to be a coincidence. He also doesn't command his area which creates uncertainty in the defence and invites pressure and long balls into the box.

Tim Howard gets a very hard time on here imo. It has to be said that if we didn't concede possession so easily in midfield, especially attempting passes that are just not on (e.g. Kone, for the 4th goal i think) then Howard wouldn't be put under so much pressure in the first place. Howard may not be having his best season, that goes without saying, but when i think of all the points he has saved us over the years then personally i think a bit more respect is in order.

We were done by poor team selection and naive tactics.....alcaraz doesn't belong at the club, and Martinez continue faith in Barry is as bad as moyes with Neville...

We didn't need tonights game to be open, we didn't need to win it!, draw it any we're through.....instead we end up conceding 5!, how the hell does that happen?!....

We should have set back and frustrated them like we did to Liverpool at Goodison....tonight was just so ridiculous.....alcaraz??!!!!, what was Martinez thinking?!....
And, for all bar the last minute, the imminent PL champions, Chelsea.

Why even have a goalkeeper just for set pieces?

Just watching the game again. 32 minutes, on top Naismiths shot is going in which is blocked. 2 corners, counter attack. Jags gets stood on so cant get back. Shocking defending and basically that's game over. So close to 2-1 up, but then 2-1 down and then bang 3_1 down a minute later

Passion and 100% effort should go hand in hand with some technical ability. Huff and puff doesn't win many games. Kyiv showed that passion and 100% effort but had shrewdness and more ability to go with it. They hammered us fair and square
Not sure there's anything to back that up, other than the scoreline. Of course they deserved to win. Never a 3 goal margin though on the balance of play.
