Maybe they should have gone to German High Schools to get proper history lessons. Then they would know that the holocaust didn't happen. Probably UK propaganda at work again.

lol

Can't think of a better demonstration of the UK history curriculum's inadequacies than your assumption that that's how Germans study the Holocaust!

In fact, if Britain were to approach its past honestly for a change, Germany is probably the best example going.

Right.

Quick question - are these intentional lies or do you just know no better?

Farage is totally out of order for using the D-Day commemorations as a springboard for political gain. As a Leave supporter I cannot condone that at all. The celebrations, if that is the right term, were meant as a way of acknowledging and giving thanks to the hundreds of thousands that put their lives on the line 75 years ago, many of who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

However, I do find it totally hypocritical that you should be the person to highlight this. You only have to look at the title of this thread that you started, to understand where your true feelings lie. Which is absolutely fine by the way, everybody is entitled to their opinion provided it stays within the laws. I just hope it's not lost on you that these sacrifices were made so that all of us, including you, could have this freedom to express opinion freely.

There is another thread in the Ale House forum specifically about D Day 75. It saddens me that, despite the high exposure the subject has received over the last few days, there is so little activity in the thread. In fact, the dead thread received many more posts when the lead singer of Linkin Park died. I truly hope that isn't a reflection on how the forum members in general feel about the commemorations.

The majority of the posts in there are very poignant and totally respectful of the sacrifices made all those years ago. Apart from your 2 posts. One of which was taking the opportunity to have a pop at Trump, and the other was a jokey one aimed at either the Queen, May or Merkel. Either way it was totally inappropriate IMO given the context of the thread.

So as regards you dishing it out to Farage here, the words kettle and black come to mind.

Have you actually read my first post ? My gripe is slimy politicians referencing the War for political gain ; sat in their comfortable sinecure without a ha'porth of realisation of the actual grime, misery, sacrifice and actuality of conflict. Any politician who uses this tactic is not worthy of respect, the hypocrisy of career politicians knows no bounds - I hope that smooths your sensibilities.

And how do the modern Tory party reward all those surviving heroes?

By taking their free TV licences off them.

So patriotic.

75 year olds would have been 1 year old when the war ended. Those who served (and survived) would be at least in their late 80s, and quite probably in their 90s by now. If you use American statistics as a guide (as I can't find any UK ones), then under 3% of those who served in WW2 are still alive, which is probably a similar figure here. This is just a cynical attempt by politicians to jump on the war bandwagon to show how patriotic they are, when the policy they talk about primarily benefits the baby boomer generation, as so much has over the years. As we've seen on these very pages however, that generation are not averse to vicariously living off the glory of those who did actually serve, so it's perhaps not surprising.

Not the Tories though is it? It’s the BBC. I’m not sure where this whole isolation thing is coming from either. We have a generation of young people that are shown in studies to be feeling the effects of loneliness and isolation- should they qualify for a free license too on those grounds?
