President Donald Trump said the U.S. plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum, and expects to sign a formal order next week.

“We’ll be imposing tariffs on steel imports" and “on aluminum imports,” Trump told metals industry executives at the White House on Thursday. “Some time next week we’ll be signing it in. And you’re going to have protection for the first time in a long time.”

wow, he's actually doing it.
It'll be interesting to see how the markets react (never mind the Chinese)

I appreciate this is what many of them are going around saying, but if "the left" is aiming to sweep the youth and minority vote whilst leaving all Trump's support is in place then they will deserve the defeat they will get. They would have learned nothing from 2016, except to double-down on a strategy that is both idiotic and incredibly dangerous.

The 2020 candidate has to be one who points out that the system isn't working for almost everyone, with no sacred cows and taking aim at healthcare, welfare, education, immigration, gun rights, economics, foreign policy and everything else that has gone wrong. Only that candidate will be able to get enough support from everywhere to smash Trump and his chums and have a serious chance at putting the country back on the right track.

Cory Booker, at least on his career to date, is not that candidate.
What I said was predicated on “if the current level of activism and engagement is maintained” and I said as much.

Only have to look at the districts that are being flipped to see that that is the case.

Trying to stay at fewer than 5000 words and less than 3 minutes to type:
- Rebuild multi-lateral international relationships in economic, diplomatic and crisis management
- Healthcare - develop more affordable options that still maintain quality coverage, I'm for universal coverage but that won't be part of a winning message, much stronger mental healthcare across the board
- Economy - need more time to think of how to articulate this
- Shootings / gun control - strong background checks, remove Dickey amendment on spending/research, no reciprocity for concealed carry, no arming teachers,
- Lots of other things.

Back at you, @Pettifogger , what are winning themes for Dems in your mind?

- Competence, competence, competence. The CEO and master negotiator can barely keep his WH together, let's not risk 4 more years of dysfunction where ____ could happen again (or if nothing to fill in the blank, something terrible could happen).

- Economy - It's the big albatross, as you suggest. I think it's too early to really figure out how to pitch it.

- HC/gun control/etc. - Won't move the general public needle most likely. I think you can make a reasonably compelling argument that HC is a mess and needs a real solution instead of kicking the can, but I'm not sure the Ds have a very attractive one at the moment (but you can still use it to bludgeon the other side).

- I think it's pretty important that a D candidate avoid getting into culture war scraps with Trump. You know his agenda by now, he takes a harsh immigration position so that elements of the left will suddenly circle the wagons on sanctuary cities. He takes an apparent anti-Muslim position so that elements of the left will go out wearing a kaffiya in unity. He's pretty good at that, and I don't think 2020 is ripe for D advances on that front (at least sitting here in 2018).

2nd snarky comment from Sasse in two days (first was on due process re guns). Wonder if he is gearing up for a primary run in 2020?

Watch them all fall in line on it though now they know. On the right that is.

Usual stuff really with the GOP. They get blindsided and then get annoyed by his crap and later applaud and cheer his idea.

I'm not so sure on this issue as this is more economic than cultural. Probably depends on what their district looks like - if they have current steel mills then will probably support but if they have auto factories then this could well mean job losses down the line like the solar tariffs caused http://www.independent.co.uk/sunpow...-solar-panel-tariff-30-per-cent-a8233866.html

I agree and i am hopefully that you are right but the trend of them agreeing to side with him on just about anything thus far has me worried about this.

Either way it should be interesting to see it unfold the next few days

In my experience you're correct, Steve. There are a lot of Trump loyalists who will immediately support tariffs even if that was unthinkable a year or two ago. Trump has an amazing amount of influence over people on both sides.

On both sides? Really? Not sure that's true.

Different types of influencing, obviously.

Trump Republicans will change positions daily if Trump asks them to do so.

Meanwhile, he's driven some on the left to absolute madness. He is so efficient at getting under their skin. There is a kneejerk reaction to Trump on the left that Trump uses to his advantage. Whereas Trump could come out in favor of abortion and conservatives would go "well maybe it isn't so bad," writers at Huffington Post would probably be authoring pieces on "why it's time to rethink Roe v. Wade" by the end of the day.
